Value of a used ANVIL ???

Looking at a used anvil a guy has, I want it more than he necessarily wants to sell it so I have to give him some type of a reasonable offer. It's a big old brute, 95 pounds and in pretty decent shape. What's the going (fair) rate for stuff like this?

All this anvil talk got me wondering about the old anvil I remember seeing as a child at my Gramp's old farmhouse. So I drove out there, rummaged around and EUREKA I found it! Now I am just wondering what some anvil efficianados might be able or willing to tell me about it.
It is a "Vulcan Arm & Hammer" with that cool logo embossed in the side. I looked all over it for numbers and found a "10" on one side near the base and a "40" on the opposite side. The darn thing has to be fairly old I would think but as far as edges and being flat and undamaged on the surface, you could slice tomatoes with the edges and I can't see as much as a scratch on the top surface. Do I have a good one?

I'm looking right now in the McMaster Carr catalog and a 55lb cast iron one cost $162.00.
A 220 lb one costs $640.00. In cast steel a 100 lb one is $831.00 and a 200 lb one is $1462.00.
These are new prices.

My only real experience with anvils is that they make great percussion instruments. That was the first thing that came to mind when I read your post. Oh, and yes, there are actual pieces of music that require an anvil. "Song of the Blacksmith" by Gustav Holst (from his Second Suite in F) is just one example.

Most will bring dollar a pound at auction in my area. If it is a long horned anvil for horseshoeing it would bring $2 or more.

This is more complicated than you think. Are the edges square and straight or does it look like a beaver has been eating away at the edges. What brand? Top brands are Hay Budden, Peter Wright, Mouse Hole, Arm & Hammer, Trenton, Fisher Eagle, etc. Ive seen some anvils that were worth about .25 a pound. At the other end of it some bring as much as $6 a lb. An old anvil in good shape (no heavy wear or damage) is often worth $2 a lb at blacksmithing conferences in the Southeast. If you can get one for less than that your doing good. Beware though, some anvils are junk.

At least $1 per pound. Drop a ball bearing on it. If it bounces, it"s worth more.
