I just bought a 1997 F350 with a 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel. Within the next couple of months I am going to need to invest in some batteries due to the age of one of the current batteries. I am planning to replace both bateries. What brand and size of batteries would be best for good service in this truck. Thanks for your opinions.

Hi Jonathan,

Can't go wrong with MC battery's. I get a e-mail flyer from Ford at $59.95eh twice a year. Register at there website to get there specials, about 4 e-mails per year.

On ther other hand, I agree with B&D and am going to replace mine with Optima yellow tops when the time comes as I plan on keeping my 7.3 for 30yrs or so. They cost about $130eh and you will need the extra battery hold downs as there a little smaller than the MC battery, (usually NC from a Optima dealer). They exceed the CCA of the MC battery requirement.

I expect 10yrs plus out of the Optima's in the AZ heat (from my sons past useage). We normally get 3yrs out of a good lead acid battery.

Optima Yellow Top Industrials or the largest Odyssey AGM battery. Are you in a southern or Northern State?

Go to the INTERSTATE BATTERIES web site and look up Optima Batteries in the tech information. I have three of these in items around here and have hooked several friends and neighbors when I start and they don"t. GREAT batteries! They have 1000 amp crank at 75 degrees and over 800 at freezing.Jeffcat PS DON"T drop a wrench across the terminals! It will melt!

go down to your local ford dealer and get a pair of BXT-65-850's. they are the best batteries for the buck and have a three year free replacement. we charge 79.95 per battery. if your dealer isn't as friendly then interstate is also a good choice also but are a bit spendier.

Casey is right!

Go get the original Motorcraft replacement. My 1996 F-250 went 7 1/2 years on the original battery. My 1992 t-bird went 7 years on the original Motorcraft battery.

Another option is the OTR truck batteries. I use them exclusively for my tractors with 00 cables.

They're 900 cca size 31 (same physical size as a 27 trolling motor battery) with 3/8 stud terminals. Truck dealer buys them by the skid getting a volume price which he passes along to you at $59 ea.
