damper on hot air furnace ducts

I want to install some type of dampers on each hot air pipe on furnace so I can send all heat to one room or to another room in the shop. Can I just use a regular damper such as you use on a wood stove, will this shut the heat off good? Thanks

You need to install a booster blower in each duct that you want to increase the flow. They are fairly cheap and available at any HVAC dealer.You can wire the booster to come on with the furnace blower and /or with a separate switch. Don't restrict the flow in any of the ducts. Ed

Hi Steve,

Depends on if you can redirect the same flow, cfm, into another or new trunk line (doubtful).

Reducing the air flow, cfm, on the heat exchanger causes several problems:

Low air flow will cause the heat exchanger to become too hot thus tripping the high limit switch, a safety switch, and the unit will have to be shut down then restarted. This causes stess on the exchanger and will crack it after a short time. A cracked heat exchanger produces CO into the room. CO is a deadly slient killer as it's both colorless and odorless to a human.

Never orperate any fuel burning appliance on there safety devices.

Low air flow will also raise the fan motor amps thus causing the motor to over heat and cycle on the thermo overload, a safety switch.

At the same time you restrick air flow you increase the fans static pressure. Too much static pressure beyond design limits will also over heat the motor eventualy burning up the fan motor.

A typical stack damper for a woodstove will shut off about 80% to 90% of the air flow at best. Using a register grill with air volume control (blades) will shut off about 95% of air flow.

So if your duct work was slightly underdesign to begin with (this is very common), shutting off one supply air duct can have disasterious results on the whole system.

Beg to differ with you Mr. Bone. The more you restrict the output of either a squirel cage blower or a centrifugal pump the easier it runs.The greatest load is when it is moving the most material. Now a piston pump or other positive displacement device is another situation.
You can prove it with an ammeter and a valve to restrict the output. Took me a long time to get that principle through my head. Ed

Wont be "air tight" but you wont lose that much air. Take into consideration that you should not overly restrict the out put on the blower. I have seen sections with a damper, that you can install in the duct or pipe itself.

Yes you could use stove dampers, but the duct dampers would work better and be cheaper. They stay in the desired position better than most stove dampers.

go to a sheetmetal contractor and get clips and make your own, you cut the circle out of scrap, one clip has handle that you can lock in place. takes two clips per damper.
