I have a Makita corded 3/8" drill (model 6408) That I want to convert to a 1/2" chuck. I'm trying to remove the chuck to determine the spindle size/thread. I don't see a locking screw to hold the chuck on the spindle as is on other drills I've seen. Any help on spindle size and how to remove the 3/8" chuck that is on it now will be much appreciated.
Gene

thanks for the tips in reply to genep, 03-16-2005 07:22:52
I used the allen wrench trick to remove it and a known 3/8" x 24 chuck spins right on.

Thanks again
Gene

Bought the same drill with a keyless chuch that did not hold as well as I would have liked last month. The threads on the spindle are right handed and I used an extra long 3/8 inch allen wrench chucked up the short end and "shocked" it with a hammer. Spun right off.( there is not a small left handed retaing screw inside this chuck.) Do be aware that the drill turns a little faster than an industrial model and with a 1/2" chuck and a larger bit in metals you will and can burn the motor or at the very least burn and dull your bits quickly. Also Makita has an excellent web site with exploded drawings for parts, specs.ect. good luck.

You must put a 90 degree peice of metal in the chuck and strike briskly with a hammer. Its going to be metic. When you use a half inch chuck drill you need the drill motor to turn the larger bits and hole saws you are now using. This may not work well for that size motor.Big hole saws on small drills kills them quickly.
