Skinner adjustable lathe chuck

Cleaning up my shop over the weekend I came upon an old lathe chuck made by Skinner that is a three jaw,but has a switch knob on the back that allows each jaw to be adjusted individually or in the other position,all to tighten together at once.Its not the style that fits my Clausing but looks like a nice chuck.Is this sort of a compromise between a 3 jaw and a 4 jaw?

Most of those chucks can have the backing plate changed to one that will fit the lathe that you have. Take a look and see if the threaded portion (for mounting) will come off. Then you just buy a new backing plate to fit the spindle of your lathe.

Greywynd,Thanks for the suggestion but since the knob is on the back it would ruin the chuck.It really wont accept adapters or Id try it on my lathe.Good suuggestion for chucks in general.Ive had a cam loc for an old Pratt&Whitney lathe mated to a face plate in the past.A little runout but worked ok.

There is no way it will fit on my Clausing which takes L1 or L0,I forget.But there is also no adapters as far as I know.The Skinner is 2 1/4 x8 tpi.[female]I would have to check that again cause no glasses but If anyone can use it on their lathe let me know-just pay shipping.E-mail takes me a couple days to figure out but its open.Condition looks good ,not sure how old it is.

My wifes email is on the thing about the blast cabinet but here it is [email protected] Mines not working or Im doing something wrong.You must hit the shift key to make the dash lines.First thought it was 2 3/8 but its 2 1/4x8 tpi.

I have 9" Skinner 4 jaw like that. The jaws are normaly independent, but all 4 can be locked in together to work like a normal 3 jaw chuck. My chuck was on an old index head. It has the "knuckle buster" locking screws on it. Circa 1900, give or take 10 years I would guess. I set it up to fit on my 11" Logan lathe. I do still use it from time to time.

I have seen those chucks, but never used one. Now there are 3 -jaw chucks that allow the main body to be adjusted to center by the use of set screws. Then you just use as a regular 3-jaw. I have one made by Buck. Works well for repetitive parts of the same diameter. Bad part is that it has a slight imbalance at high speeds.
