Old Air compressor question

for all you guys out there with the big old air compressors what kind of pump up times to you get from a empty tank to a full tank. what kind of speeds should I expect or see to fill up a 60 gallon tank. on a 2 stage pump, 10 mins?

Pump up time varies depending on the cubic feet/minute (CFM) flow of the compressor and the volume of the receiver.

CFM is dependent on bore, stroke and RPM. If you know the bore and stroke of the low pressure (larger) cylinder you can guesstimate CFM. To do this calculate the cylinder volume in inches (Pi * (bore/2)^2 * stroke) and divide the result by 1728 to convert cubic inches to cubic feet. This is the calculated CFM, actual CFM will be something close to your answer multiplied by 0.75.

Now, there are 0.133680556 cubic feet/gallon so multiply your tank size by 0.133680556 to get the cubic feet dimension of your tank then divide by your compressors estimated CFM to get a fill time.

Hey Jay,
My compressor isn't all that old but... 7.5hp 2 stage compressor filling 80 gal tank to 175 psi requires about 10 minutes. HTH

Jay - Pump up time from empty depends on four things: Drive motor HP, pressure switch high cut-off setting, receiver tank volume and whether the pump is single or two stage.

My 50 year old Kellogg 2 HP stage pumping into an 80 gallon tank takes a good 8 - 10 minutes to fill to 160 psi from an empty start.
