Looking for a 11/16 X 23 left-hand tap

Looking for a source to buy an 11/16" X 23 threads per inch, left-hand tap. It's what Case uses in some their tie rod ends and steering parts. I've already tried ENCO and Mcmaster.

As a follow up to a comment on another post, I have tried to order from Grainger and was told that they only sell to commercial accounts. Where I work, we buy lots of stuff from them, so catalog is in shop, thus I tried to order stuff for me. No can do. I have bought from the other suppliers mentioned with no problems. Just a FYI.

I have bought a bunch of stuff from Grainger. I buy under my employers name, and pay right there at the counter. They accept credit cards. I never asked about checks or cash. Found the local guys real helpful - even alerting me as to discounts availible. My employer is ok with this - it doesn't cost them anything. Easy,

Yeah, I have the thru company purchase plan, company wants payment first, then the PO is made, and order goes thru. I tried to get parts for an item that was trashed at work and over the phone there was no way they wanted to deal. Having dealt with state sales tax depts in past, I can understand Graingers policy. Sooo, just a whole lot easier to call MSC or Enco or Mc Master and poof the stuff is there in a day or two. Besides if you really want something exotic the others are more likely to have it. Or go to Lowes and buy tools there, they seem to turn nuts ok. For now...

The one by me doesnt take cash.Ive had words in Grangers and a plumbimg supply house with that attitude.I just say "so you jerks want me to go to Home Depot, no problem" Thought money spends anywhere.Apparently not.Hope they go out of business.

Hi All,

Graingers has always been a wholesale only supply house and depending on where your at, sometimes will not allow employees to buy using your employers name even tho you pay cash. Also, some employers request no employee sales. I worked for several Companys where this was the policy.

I used to be able to get my previous employers discount price but that is no longer true. I can buy at retail book price but no volume discount pricing. I now need a Company PO number to get the discount price.

All it takes is one employee not to pay sales tax on a personal purchase and your employer will change there account type.

Grainger's parts Dept is another ball game. They will sell to anyone, only the price is the question.

Is it possible you aren't counting the threads right? Put the end of the rule on one thread, count ONE for the NEXT thread and so on until you get to the inch mark on the rule.

You could make a tap. Start with a worn tie rod end that you might not need, and grind some flats on the threads. Make the flats wider at the tip of the thread. Two flats or three flats. Its not the greatest tap shape but its probably fine for cleaning threads. I've seen #1 and #2 taps in the hobby shop made exactly that way and they did cut threads for me. And if it happens that you grind on the end half or 3/4 inch of a good tie rod end and when its all together you have it screwed a half inch past the grinding, only you will know you used a good tie rod end to make the thread cleaning tap.

Ends up my original Case parts book for my 580CK is wrong. That's what I get for not checking myself. My parts book for my Case 580CK backhoe shows the tie rod tube, two jam nuts, and two tie rod ends all using 11/16" diam. thread by 23 TPI. After all the posts and my own searching, I went out and measured it myself. It's 11/16" X 18, right hand thread on one end, and left hand thread on the other. I've got brand new tie rod ends that I bought through this site. They are also 11/16" X 18. So, I was initially impressed with the Case parts book for giving me all the specs. - but no so impressed anymore. I've had this Case backhoe sitting in my shop for years - as a "basket case" (no pun intended). So, I'm finally piecing it together. Tie rod threads are all screwed up and have been welded on. So, I wanted to either clean them up the threads or make a new tie rod tube. I just found both taps I need at Mcmaster.com - but . . . one is $32, and the other - the LH tap is $72. Too much to spend for something I might never use again. So, I've got a tie rod assembly sitting here from a 1991 F150 Ford pickup with tie-rod ends that fit the Case just fine. So, I guess I'll weld some tube into it to make it the correct length and use Ford truck parts instead. I'm sure it will come back to haunt me some day. I'll go to replace the tie-rod ends and the Case parts won't fit. Come to think about it though, I'll probably be dead by then - maybe my son will have to deal with it and curse his "old man." Thanks for the input.

jdemaris,I see 11/16-24 left hand in the MSC catalog but no 23 per inch.for 11/16 lh there is i8,20,24,28,32,and 40 but no 23.I dont deal with metrics myself.

Hi,

Are you sure it is an 11/16-23? That isn't an American National Standards Institute (ANSI B1.1 - 1974) listed size. The closest I see in that standard is 11/16-24 which is a Unified National Extra Fine (UNEF) thread. Even the 11/16-24 appears to not be a preferred thread and I would expect you will have difficulty locating any company that stocks a tap for it - RH or LH - or even a fastener to mate with it. You probably could have a tap custom built for $$$. Or you could try a CASE dealer. My tendency would be to investigate the possibility of modifying the part to accommodate a more common thread size - in RH also, unless a LH is absolutely necessary.
