Been there, done that about four years ago to the day! My birthday is the 14th and I had it two days later. Same valve you are getting. I have the St.Judes cause I was 52 at the time and there ain't no way I wanted to get opened up again at 65 years old. Pig,calf, and human valves are good for 10-18 years. The metal and plastic valve is good till you croak. The trouble is the cumadin. Blood thinner is not a big deal but it is for the rest of your life. Cost is around $20.oo a month. You will TICK at night for a couple of weeks till things settle in and you get a little fat again around your heart. Wait till you wake up in ICU with a tube down your throat, a drain tube in your belly, two little wires so they can jump start you, and a WEE WEE tube! After six days I was such a pain in the a--, they threw me out! Don't sweet the details you will be fine. Now for a few tips from a felow "Zipper". WHAT EVER YOU DO - DON'T SNEEZE!!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !Remember the cartoons when the mouse or a cat blows up like a balloon? You will not beleave how close that is to real life. GOOD golly Miss Molley!!!! PAIN IS NOT THE WORD!!! Do not burp , hic-up or COUGH for at least a week. How to stop a sneeze. THIS IS NO JOKE. If you feel one a comin....Wet your finger and stick it up what ever nostril as fast as you can. Dig out what ever is causing the trouble and tell everyone to pis----- off!!! I do hope you are laughing and I hope I have helped but I mean it! One more thing; the ""pillow" deal did not work for me. If you need to do a GENTLE cough take your hands and push your chest together about where your nipples are. It is crude but now you know where to push. They will use fat thread to close you and they use a turn under knot. The scar after two years is almost invisable! The fist month the stiches will dissolve and you will have some really neat "zits" that you will need to gently squeeze out. Talk to your doctor but this will be about right. God bless and let us know when you get back. P.S. my insurance bill was over $223,000! Jeff cat

We'll keep you in our thoughts and prayers...

You just concentrate on recovering and getting back here to let us know how you feel.

My neighbor had a valve replacment almost 15 years ago and he seems to be getting stronger every year....he is 87 now...and still splits wood, goes hunting etc....

Positive attitude will see you through.

Speedy recovery, Larry! One of my daughter's classmates got a "valve job" when he was 11 years old! He's got a metal one, if you put your ear against his chest you can hear it softly "click". He'll graduate high school this spring and is doing just fine! Don

Hi Larry,

Gees that sounds like it cost alot money. Why don't you meet us at the local coffee shop and we'll install you one of those squeeze bulb thingy's. Add some 1/4" gas line in a 1/2" bore hole with some JB Weld for a sealant and were done!

Gees guys we can use some of our new tools we've been buying :)

Just think all you will need to do is give yourself alittle pump between keystrokes...LOL

Get well soon and talk with you when you get back :)

Good luck. My father had one installed about 7 yrs ago at age 75. He never had any pain killers after the original anesthetic and was home from the hospital in 5 days. They really have this operation figured out.

One of the guys at the shop had a "Valve Job" about 5 years ago. He is around 50 now, & in excellent health. He has not had any problems since his surgery.....

A metal one? or the "pig" valve (no, its not really a pig valve, but thats what I've always heard them called.

I had a friend who had a metal one installed. He clicked after that. Kinda a novelity. It lasted him many years until he grew old and tired and passed away.

Good luck, its no fun, thats for sure.

Charles

Actually it is a pig valve. They come from specially raised pigs.
