Here"s a picture of my mini-lathe--sorry about the size, I"m still sorting out my new digital camera. As I"d mentioned before, they"re the bee"s knees for small projects--sorry about the messy picture, but I"ve been too busy making chips to clean it off. My latest project was making the axles and wheels for a friend"s son"s mousetrap car. So far his father has got it to go the entire way across their 80" shop--not bad for 1 mousepower!

Must have been a ship load of those brought in recently. Our local TSC has sold 3-4 of them but I haven"t paid any attention to the price. One of those would compliment my Summit 18x80 nicely. Heres a pic, if it works.

Lucass: yes, it does. There are also extra gears that come with the lathe that allow cutting different threads. I have not actually cut threads with it--haven't had a need to--but it does have the capability.

What did that cost ya? How much swing over the carriage? Is it precise enough to .001" of true to the tailstock? Where is it made?

MR: They run about $350-450 depending on accessories, perhaps a bit less on sale. Mine was $400, but came with a ton of accessories, like a steady rest and a qctp. They"re rated as a nominal 7" swing, though that"s over the bed if I remember--over the carriage would of course be a bit less. I"ve never turned anything beyond 3" on it--never had the need. The chuck is true within about 0.002" runout, though other people have reported theirs to be a bit better than that. I also have a 4-jaw chuck, and I can get that trued up to less than 0.001" if I"m willing to fiddle with it. Cummins is just one of several companies that put their name on the same lathe--Northern Tool, Harbor Freight, and Grizzly being 3 more. The actual manufacturer is Sieg of China.

Hay: Make sure you get the accessory kit with the lathe. On mine, it was a blue steel box stuffed down in the carton, and wasn"t setting with the lathe on the display model. I didn"t realize that it even came with the lathe until I got the box home (I assume you know the Cummins tool show drill--you mark your purchases on a pad, then go out to their tractor-trailer and pick up the actual merchandise after you"ve paid) so it was a pleasant surprise. I thought I was buying the bare lathe, and ended up with a ton of accessories for the same price ($400).

Dang, you have made some chips. Dandy little lathes for small projects. Recently ordered a 4 jaw 4" chuck for my 8x12.

Guys: I have one of these mini-lathes I purchased from a HOMIER traveling tool sale ($299.99). They are a very good tool for the money & much information can be found on "tweaking" them & improving them at www.mini-lathe.com & also see www.littlemachineshop for all kinds of spare parts & accesories. They are cheap to buy & easy to learn on & can save you a lot of money by making & repairing small parts for yourself. Go see the above listed sites before buying a 4 jaw chuck as a 4"-4 jaw chuck from littlemachineshop.com can be bought cheap enough & adapted to the lathe in place of a 3" 4 jaw chuck. You'll never reret buying a 4" 4 jaw instead of a 3" as it will hold quite a few larger items.
