I have an old Poulan SD25 chainsaw. The starter rope will not pull, but pulls easily if I remove spark plug. It"s as if I am pulling against a vacuum. I"ve cleaned exhaust, carb, fuel filter, etc. but no change. Does this sound like reed valves stuck and if so, can they be cleaned? Any easy way to do it?

Reeds are in between the carb and the crankcase. I have never heard of a set doing this but from what you describe it may be it. You could try some wd-40 or some aerosol solvent through the carb throat to loosen things up. If that fails pull the carb off and you should be able to identify the reed cage. I wonder if this has been serviced by someone else and they possibly installed the reeds & cage backwards? I would also check to make sure that someone didn"t put too long of a plug in it. Could be hitting the piston.

Fixed it. Reed valves were gummed up. Removed carb and poured lacquer thinner in crankcase, followed by WD-40 and compressed air. More WD, then cranked it, smoked for awhile, but running great! Thanx!
