Got a lead on a marine generator LP type. Rated at 45KVA. Thinking of using this for shop power and auxillary power for new house during power outages (wired properly of course). Comments?

I have two Onan gensets on Propane. Converted the first from gas because the second ran so good. Cranks right up on an automatic starter. I think the LP is much better than gas, close to diesel and better starting than both.

That is large enough to operate all the essential things. Think about how cold it gets where you are. Propane does not vaporize well at low temps. and cranking the LP engine in the cold may be a challenge. If you have natural gas, converting to natural is possible, but I do not have experience in actually doing so.

Going from natural gas to propane or visa versa normally requires fuel pressure settings and timing changes. You may have to change the spring in the regulator but we normally don't.

BTU content used as a guide only...

Propane = 2400 btu/scf
NG = 1000 btu/scf

So with that in mind, your engine only cares about the btu's that it's given (btu/hp/hr) so you can see it takes 2.4 times more natural gas to do the same job. When we run NG engines on Propane, we normally back the spring way off in the regulator or remove it completely. Your really suppose to have a negative pressure regulator for propane but in most cases it's not required.
Sorry for the long message but maybe it may help on any possible conversions out there.
