the cummins traveling tool sale is coming to my area this weekend. has anyone bought anything from them? what kind of quality do they have? i am most interested in the mini lathe and the mini milling machine. it would only be used for light home projects--not production work. any comments would be appreciated.

I have some of their tools, and they are comparable to Harbor Freight.

One word. Junk. Save your money and buy good stuff. If you can't afford new, buy an older used American-made piece. Trying to save a buck now will cost you more later. You get what you pay for.

Hay: I got my mini-lathe from them and have been VERY happy with it. Remember--the stuff they sell is in most cases the EXACT SAME China-made stuff sold by Harbor Freight, Northern Tool, etc. etc. As such, you've got to look at it as a kit you put together, rather than an immediately perfectly functional appliance. If you can live with this, then you can have a large number of tools that are very capable within their limits at a fraction of the price the "tool snobs" will pay for the same machinery. Think of it as 80% of the quality for 25% of the price--unless you use the stuff all-day-every-day most of their products are perfectly adequate. I liked their mini-lathe well enough I got a mini-mill shortly thereafter (be warned--once you get one you'll soon find you "need" the other...!) and have used both of them extensively. For making small one-off parts, you can't beat 'em.
