striping paint from maple bookshelves

I scored some maple bookshelves that I think will look very nice, but they look "whitewashed" or lightly pained white. Can these be salvaged? and what would i use, stripper or sandpaper?

Stripeeze or Zip Strip or any other good paint remover.All any of it is is benzene and parafin. I have a receipe for making it somewhere around here.My brother used to repain antique clocks and he used Easy Off oven cleaner on them.

I also say zip strip but wear rubber glover,this stuff works on any thing even stripped a old truck with it took it to bare metal quick.
