Engine Block Corrosion Repair

I�m replacing the head gasket on an antique tractor gasoline powered engine. The surface of the cast iron block is corroded around the coolant passageways that pass between the head and the block. The effected areas won�t support the sealing crush rings in the head gasket. I'm aware of using aluminum paint as a gasket sealer however I'm concerned it may not be enough. I'm looking for a cheap fix for this problem. Have you tried it?

You did not say how large the coolant holes were. One time we had that problem, drilled the hole out threaded it, put a pipe bushing in. sawed it off, filed it smooth with the block and block was repaired. A company called Irontite also makes many funny plugs for diesel block and head repairs that you can alter for other things.

The coolant holes are 1/2" dia. Unfortunately I have 16 holes with one of the being a kidney shaped groove that's very near a head bolt. In addition, the center of crush rings in the gasket do not line up with the centers of the holes. Plus the diameter of the crush rings is about 3/4" to 1" dia.

Interesting solution though for the right conditions. Thank you.

if you use epoxie, deavcon plastic steel putty would be my choice, you could use a long file to get it back flat... if i have a block in with that problem ,i weld it upp and surface grind it though.. good luck, lucas

Do you think Devcon plastic steel putty would be better than JB Weld? Have you used it for this specific application before?

Epoxy steel and have a machine shop plane it flat after curing? Can you afford to rebuild this engine a 2nd time?

Hi FI,

I'm with B&D as this is the perfect use of JB weld mixed to where it dires semi-hard.

First power wire brush clean to white metal then use alcohol as a cleaner before applying the JB. As the JB sets scrape flat from many directions, then when fully set up then use a drill bit to clean the hole diameter.

Or you can wax the smooth end of the bit and use it as a bore mold. The JB won't stick to the bit. Problem here is you can't work the JB flat to the head surface until set up.

I repaired a warped VW diesel head this way and it lasted for 25k miles until I got a chance to rebuild it correct.

Years ago a guy with a machine shop had his boring bar jump and chatter in a Packard block. Put a nick in the cylinder, used JB weld and cleaned it up, supposedly its still running. Just my $.02
