I'm trying to increase the memory in my computer for a GIS application. I presently have three 128 MB PC100 chips in the three slots. I can cannibalize a 256 MB PC133 chip from a surplus computer. Can I remove one of the 128 MB chips and replace it with the 256 MB chip? Are PC 100 and PC 133 chips cross compatible and would I notice any difference?

"Speed" doesn"t matter. If you put a 256 meg board in with 2 128 megs, your machine will only use half the space on the new 256. You will gain nothing unless all of your boards are 256 meg.

The system will recognize the addition of the 256mb stick. Systems are designed for the mix and matching of megabytes. But, not designed to have pc133/100 and then a stick of pc2100. A stick of 256mb PC133 put into a system with 2 sticks of 128mb PC100 will run at 100mhz. The system will then recognize 512mb of RAM.

Like everything else, it depends. I'm currently running a mix of PC100 and PC133 DIMMs in my PC with no problems. When I went to buy memory, the guy in the store assured me that the PC133 chips would automatically sense that they need to downshift to PC100 speed. It appears he was right.

Older PC133 memory is supposed to be backward compatible. New PC133 memory is not.

If it doesn't work, remove all of the 128's and try the 256/133 by itself. If that works, then you have 2 choices: put it back the way it was and live with it, or obtain another 256/133 or larger.
I have mixed 100's and 133's on Compaq's with no problems. Often now the 133's are on sale and are cheaper than the 100's.

Some PC133 can be used inplace of PC100. More often than not this is the case. If you can research the PC133 stick, typically it will state if it will work. Go to google and type in the numbers on the sticker. Also, make sure that the BIOS of you computer does not have a memory limit. Some sytems (Wal-mart HP's) have low limits, especially older systems.

You can also go to crucial.com and put your brand and model in the search and find which memory fits your computer.

Yes, crucial and kingston all have memory searches. The point is you can put 2gigs of memory in a system but the BIOS limit may be 512mb. So it is a waste to put the $ into the memory. You would have to purchase a new system with a higher BIOS limit. Integrated systems are typically low dollar, low end. Those systems are not designed for upgrades. The vendor gets you to buy another computer when that one cannot be upgraded to run that new game.

Go to HP's website and search your model number. In all of the junk is a spec sheet for your model. That should tell you the memory limit. If you have any books with it they may have the same info. Depending on how old it is, if it has integrated graphics, etc, the limit is 512mb. New systems have higher limits.

It should work. The faster pc133 will run only as fast as the rest of your system, which will be pc100. The only way to know for sure is try it. It will either work ok or give you problems, in which case you just go back to the way it was.

Find out what you need and go to the staples web site. Look at the chart. You cant always mix and match these boards.I needed more memory for a 3 in one PSC. Just upgraded this 2000 pro and was 45 bucks for the board.
