Don't know about the Northern splitters but I like the one that Tractor Supply sells for a little more-- it can switch between vertical and horizontal

I bought one last summer.

I noticed some galling on the side of the beam. Turns out that the spacers in the slider had a rough spot on both sides. About a half hour with a grinder solved the problem.

I also had to reinforce the arms that attach to the top link. I took the splitter to my father in law's to split some maple and noticed that they started to bend during the six mile trip to his house. I jacked them back up into place and bolted a couple of pieces of angle iron between the arms and the beam. I would liked to have welded them but they'll have to come off if I ever need to remove the cylinder.

It splits anything that I ask it to and the ability to lower it down on the ground to load large pieces is a real back saver. My tractor puts out 9 gpm. It gives me about a 16 second cycle time (full travel both directions).

I see the three point cordwood saws advertised in Lancaster (PA) Farming but I haven't had a chance to look at one up close.
