OBD Scanner for automobiles

I saw an OBD II hand held diagnostic scanner tonight at Wal-Mart for $98. It came with cable and manuals. Said it would read codes for Honda,Toyota,GM,Ford,Chrysler that are 1996 to present. Has anybody bought one of these or had experience with them? Would it be OK for the home mechanic? Thanks.

Those less than $100 scanners only do generic OBDII tests and do not perform manufacturer specific tests. Accessing the DTC is only a baby step in the direction of trying to fix the problem. No scanner will perform complete DTC diagnostics. You'll need everything from the most updated service information, to a digital volt ohm meter, and the skills that go with it. Of course you can subscribe to the shotgun approach of car repair and throw parts at the problem hoping to fix it. However, hope isn't a method and there's no sense adding to a parts store's bottom line by buying needless parts just because they'll check for available DTCs for free. The practice does ensure job security for the technicians in my area.

They would be ok for the home mechanic if you know how a modern engine works with all the sensors and such. You will also most likely need a DVM to test individual components and a good service manual. If you don"t know how to work on your car they are pretty useless. btw you can find them cheaper than $99 if you look.

Save your money, Bryan has told you like it really is. Codes dont mean nothing unless you know what else to look for. A code may tell you where it is, but not what caused it.

Thanks for reply. I have had nothing but bad luck with the AutoZone around here. The people in this store wouldn't know a spark plug from an O2 sensor and are very rude. I wouldn't let them scan my lawn mower- and they would probably try.
I'm sure they aren't all like that but at this store its what I'm stuck with.

Save your money and take it to a shop and have it Diagnoised properly . I love Auotzone's free scan deal. I get tons of customers that have been there ,,bought parts were told needed to fix code . Once they get tired of spending money tossing parts at it they bring it in to get it fixed right . Trouble code are a cause and effect deal. Just because it says oxygen sensor code does not mean sensor is bad .Computer has seen out of limit siganl , which needs to be diagnoised to find out why. Might be fuel delivery , vac leaks etc . i just hate to see people toss money at a problem without having clue why it;s there in first place . It's good for business ,,but usually by the time customer gets to the point he brings car in ,he;s not very happy and empty wallet . Code readers might be ok for some.Give you basic idea what "might "be wrong or point you in one direction . But it's not gonna fix every problem .

Save your money go to autozone and they will scan for FREE then you use the money you save for parts.

Around here Autozone doesn't carry parts. The store shelfs are full, but those parts are always for some other car.

Have them scan it for free then buy the part somewhere else. Beats paying the dealer $75.00 for the same scan (scam).
