Craftsman Robogrips... anyone actually use them?

I've had a pair sitting in the bottom of one of my toolboxes for years. As far as I can remember, they are supposed to be a sort of self-adjusting plier. I don't know what mine supposedly adjust to, but it's never a good confident grip. I always ditch the Robos and grab my Vice Grips or water pump pliers when I'm serious. Just wondering what others think of these pliers...

I forgot about these things. I have a large and small set of the locking pliers, and two of the slip joint robos. They're still in the garage toolbox somewhere. Anyone want an almost new set for free? I should probably free up the space for something else.

Some of the cheap vise-grip knock-offs are just as bad. In some cases, brand names mean alot. Vice Grips. Channel Locks.

It seems with Craftsman, you never know. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. I've never had problems with Craftsman wrenches and sockets sets in the past, but lately I've got a set and the chrome is chipping off. The extensions won't fit in the sockets either. They must be making them overseas now . . .

Buyer beware.

I guess the Bob Vila marketing works good for Sears. I fell for them too, they just take up space. Maybe Tim Taylor would give more accurate tool promotions, Always liked tool time.

im glad i was never blessed with the robogrip fad. i was warned before adding them to my xmas list. they are about as good as the crapsman rachets{JUNK}. exchanged all my rachets, now the just sit in a pile at the back of the tool box tray with the new stickers and plastic hangers still on them.

Several years ago, my daddy gave me his new unused pair to remove the bolt from my oil plan during an oil change. I tried them for about five minutes and said "The h%ll with this!" and went and got a box end wrench. I've since found out that my daddy doesn't like them either.

I always thought I was using them wrong until I read these posts. Those things were the sorriest pliers I ever used. James

I agree with everyone else. Good idea that just didn't work out very well. But they actually hold very well when you finally get them adjusted correctly. But thats the hard part. I was given a pair that I only use if I have nothing else handy.

I thought I wasn't using them in the right way as I could never get them to grip with any amount of force. Also the plastic handled rubber strap wrenches and the 2.4 volt cordless screwdrivers that they sell are just about as useless as the Robo Grips. I say send it all back to China on a leaky boat.

Robogrips should be Roboslips.

Just ran across my set doing tool inventory (see linked post). Would agree with all the other posts. Good idea but poor execution. Sears still lists them in the catalog as I found in said Inventory. Bought mine at a farm sale they were like new but the guy didn't do much shop work. Found out why they looked like new!!

Has made me even more cautious of any of the stuff that Vila pushes at christmas.

Don't use them much can't get a good grip and have to maintain pressure to keep.

I wanted them for Christmas one year. What a mistake - got 5 pair. I keep 2 pair on the backboard of my bench just in case my giftors show up. So except for neat looking, they are worthless to me.

I purchased a pair of Robo Grips several years ago. I own a lot of Craftsman tools and I couldn't Craftsman would put their name on such a piece of junk. I reach for my Vise Grips because I can count on them to do the job.

The previous posts summarize my experience and thoughts on the tool. Of interest to me is the fact that like my Robo, others were gifts also. I feel that the retailers and suppliers often market the new gimmick knowing it will fullfill the need of someone to buy a gift, rather than satisfy the practical needs of the end user. Tell Santa.

i broke mine and trust me wasnt from great use was probably about the 3rd time i used them hated them and i took them back to sears for their warrenty the regular pliers were cheaper and asked if i could trade them for jsut a regular pair of pliers and they let me i think they are but not sure if still in production i would look and maybe "accidently break yours" and see if you could get a pair of vice grips out of it maybe not as vice grips are more then the robo grips but maybe at least get a pair of pliers for your robo grips

Wife bought me a pair for Christmas a few years ago, and the best use I found for them was when I lost them under the house, and haven't went back looking for them. Gene Davis

Yup--my father got me a pair for Christmas a few years ago. I"m glad that it"s the thought that counts, because I can count the times I"ve used them on one hand....

DITTO

I bought a pair about ten years ago and found them to be the most awkward cumbersome things I ever used. Mine are hanging on the shop wall as a reminder of what poor engineering can produce..

I keep 2 of them with my welder. They work great for picking up HOT metal so you can turn it over to weld other side. Granted they don't work well for anything else but for this they have a place.
