what is the best buy in mini metal lathes? i have seen several brands on the internet and am getting confused with all the different spec. i am looking for something simple to setup and use and simple to keep in adjustment. it's going to be used for small hobby work so i don't need nor can afford a large, expensive machine. any suggestions is appreciated.

I purchased the HF 8 X 12 precision mini lathe about 3 months ago. Use it mostly for hobby related tasks, but it a very nice little lathe for $529.00. About twice the size and weight of most 7 X 12 mini lathes on the market today.

You sorta have to figure the biggest work youll do.The Sherline and those are good but they are for smaller hobby things that you see in home shop machinist and modeling type.Something like model aircrft size parts get turned on them.

I bought my 7x9 at a Homier traveling circus sale for $300.00, have had good luck with it, it is pretty accurate. You can buy the saem lathe at Harbor Freight. For a mini-lathe, that is the way to go. I do not regret it one bit.

By mini lathe, I guess you mean a small lathe with a capacity of around 3" diameter x 9 to 12" long. Sherline makes such a lathe and is intended for hobby use such as model railroading. Their cost is around $400 and have a complete line of accessories available like a milling attachment, chucks, threading attachments, etc. You can probably reach them on the internet by entering Sherline in your browser.

I have a Atlas lathe that has a 4 jaw chuck, speed changes that is in excellent condition. Dont know where you are located but arrangements can be made for delivery. I am retiring from the business and am selling differnt items. Rather than putting it on ebay I would like to sell the items privatly. My email is open so email me.

Last time I bought a lathe I looked at a Enco in a friends shop. When it ran the gears howled something fierce. Answered my question about that one. Enco has some ok stuff but be careful. Jet looks good also.

Don't know what size you are looking for. If you are looking for something in the mid size range check with machine shop machinery dealers. Bought the lathe I have now from one had had it in his inventory for a while. Paid just a little more than what Enco wanted for the same size. Lathe I got is a Clausing Colechester. The kicker was it included a taper attachment and digital read out (DRO). Never would have had a DRO without that deal. Now I won't have a machine tool without it.

Hay: mini-lathe.com is the best single spot for info on these. As Coloken mentioned, most nearly are identical. HOWEVER, be careful what you get for the price you pay--for instance, I got mine at a Cummins travelling tool show. For $399, I got the lathe and a bunch of extra goodies--steady rest, follow rest, drill chuck, 5-piece tool bit set, extra set of chuck jaws, faceplate, live spindle, dead spindle, and a Quick Change Tool Post with 3 adapters. Some places will sell these as a set for an additional fee, while others will include them with the lathe. Make sure you know EXACTLY what's included with the lathe or a "good deal" can go south when you have to buy the accessories separately. There are also many small differences between versions--solid handwheels vs. spoked handwheels for instance. Again, ask questions BEFORE buying. It is a big advantage to be able to physically inspect the product before buying so you don't get baited and switched by an outdated catalog picture.

If you can't find a good use lathe you are gonna be limited with forgien ones. Jet is pretty good about inspecting theirs before the release them to the market. Enco also has pretty good quality. Check www.enco.com I don't know Jets web site. I have two Jet lathes, a 6X19 and a 12x36, I've had both for over 20 years and havent had a problem with then, Use to run a Gun-Machine shop but now only use them for my own playing.

Go to Link ---something versions. Lot of good web spots. like yahoo groups if you can stand yahoo. Most are idenical from same factory in China. I am highly impress with the quality of mine. I found harbor freight to be the poorest buy. Homiers the best when I got mine. Northern tool too high. Little machine shop if he is still in business for tools etc. Best buy? Where you located? If close enough to pick up. I am kpierce ....fri.com
