Local newspaper says that there is an O'Rileys coming to town. Anybody know anything much about them? We already have a Napa, Bumper to Bumper, a Pronto line dealer, and an Advance auto parts. Question is how do they compare to these stores? What is the good, bad, and the ugly of this chain parts store? Gene Davis Tennille, Ga.

Used to go to Napa, spent quite a bit of money, they only have one guy there that knows what he is doing, if he is busy, you are out of luck, have started using O'Rileys, have had good luck with them, in this area, they are a lot easier to deal with than Napa, Advance, or Auto Zone.

O'Riley's is my first choice, for auto parts (I don't usually bother with ANY of the auto parts houses for tractor parts). Auto Zone is thier biggest competitor, here, I guess... and they're pretty much useless (in my book), except for things like oil and set covers. NAPA is just too "stuck on theirselves"... overpriced and too much of an "attitude" from the couter people...

Just my humble opinion....

O'Reilly's has two stores where I live. One I try not to set foot in since they can't find a thing in their manuals or on their computers. However they are the store that stocks the older vehicle parts, so often the other store has to get the parts from it.

One of the stores I do some business with. I've not had much luck with them finding parts for my 1949 Chevy 3800 truck. For a cheap alternator their price couldn't be beaten however. Battery prices are okay and so far the batteries seem to last okay.

Some items seem reasonablly priced, others over priced.

I can't compare to the stores you mentioned except NAPA. I don't care for the local NAPA store. I spent nearly a half hour there one day getting common 6 volt light bulbs for my truck. Everything there seems overpriced to me. Another local mom and pop store that has been in business for over 80 years gets most of my business and the countermen know what you want and often the number of the item you need. A little pricey, but I want to keep them around.

I think I"d stick with NAPA. I went into the local O"reilys one time to see what it was like. I asked them if they had ridge reamer for sale. The fellow there picked up a blister packed screwdriver and started reading the label on the back to see if he was holding a ridge reamer.

I walked out went straight to NAPA and asked the same thing. The guy handed me a ridge reamer, I handed him 50 bucks and was out the door in 2 minutes.

I"m all for price competition, but sometimes it"s not worth the frustration of having to educate the people you"re paying to "help" you.

Well, I know that one day Sanders Tractor, the local Ford / New Holland dealer was out of hydraulic oil, out of desperation, I bought a 5 gallon pail there "generic" it was over $40.00. That price was higher than the Ford Dealer for the Ford branded oil. And I really hate the radio commercial too. ;>)

I had an experience a while back with o'reileys: I needed a brake booster for a chevy 2ton dump truck
I went to O'reileys and they told me I had to know which manufacturer. 1 was like $250 with the m/c the other was almost 500. I figured if it had the cylinder I should be able to use it so he ordered it.. It was completely different and unusable. I went to NAPA and he looked it up and said ok he could get it for $184 So I ordered it.. exactly what I needed not B/S about who made it. Then The Kicker I found that I needed the M/C also. lo and behold the same guy looked it up and said OH OH. You cannot buy the M/C seperate no Way..But you can buy the complete unit with M/C. He said Tell you what I will do.. I will order the complete unit and you bring in your M/c core and we will take the MC off and return the booster as wrong unit then will return your old booster w/mC as a unit and get around it that way.. Needless to say NAPA has my vote for service...

O'Riley's is just now getting established in my part of NC. Their newest store is 50 feet from an Advance store and about 300 feet from Autozone. Convenient for me. Should keep prices competitive.

Street gossip has it that O'Riley's and Advance always build just as close to each other as they can.

It is said that each of the two companies are owned by a divorced couple. Each is determined to run the other out of business or at least keep them from getting much of it. Competition is good no matter the reason.

While I have my doubts the above is true, it may be, I just don't know. I do know that both stores showed up within a few months of each other where I live.

Advance has been in NC for a long time. I think they are headquartered in Roanoke VA.

O"Riley"s is no longer family owened, they have been public for several years. The last family member CEO just steped down about a week ago. I talk to there Drivers on the CB some, some of the older ones tell me it is quit different since they went public. They are about the 9 largest in the nation now.

Here in Macon,Mo. We only have two choices ,NAPA or Orielly's. I think NAPA is the same about everywhere. Oriellyshas been OK ,I have ordered many odd parts from them and they always came through. They came up with every model starter drive for tractor I asked for and hydrovac brake boosters for feveral antique 2 ton trucks. I would put them a step below NAPA but a couple steps above Autozone or car quest.

Gene, I work for a Bumper to Bumper DC. All parts stores have good parts if you want to pay for them. Like Old said it depends on who is behind the counter. I buy my parts from the DC, where I work because I get a good discount. I go straight to my boss because he is one of the older parts men, with hundreds of numbers stored in his head. He tells me if I want the cheap one or the more costly one. I don"t know if the one in your town would be out of one of our DC"s or not. We have 4 DC"s, Little Rock, Monroe, La., Tulsa, Ok., and the one I work at Springfield, Mo. Little Rock being the Flagship. I will tell you this and I shouldn"t, we had a good account it a townseveral miles east of SPFG. one day a REP. from O"Riley"s walked in and said we want to buy your store. The owner said it is not for sale, the O"Riley REP said well we are going to put one in across the st. and sell below cost until you are out of business. The man felt he had no choice.

They bought up all the pronto aka parts plus stores around here,but the few times that I have went into there store fast friendly service and I did not feel goughed and they still turn rotars this is getting to be a hard to find service around here sad for a city of over 100,000

Around here, Southern Pines NC, nobody will turn rotors. We have Auto Zone, Napa, Carquest and Advance Auto(I hate Advance) and none will turn them. They tell me the car makers now say that rotors should be replaced at each pad change.

I asked if they could measure them and tell me the thickness. The people at Advance and Auto Zone said they couldn't find the caliper to measure them.

James when I ran a delivery route I started to notice that I was taking a lot of empty rotar boxes to many of mt stores in fact there were wagner boxes ,then I started noticing that Pallets of cheap forein made rotars would show up ya don't think that they would rebox them and sell them for the brand name price do you?

Sounds like you were employed by O'Reileys. They are building one here in Macon, Georgia and i have thought about employment with them. How are they to work for and are they honest, it doesn't sound like it. They are building in the same area as an Advance Auto and Napa which i'm employed by now as route driver. Please respond! This will help me to know if i need to stay with Napa .

Sort of depends on who is behind the counter so can be good some if its not in the computer don't know the %^&* from a hole in the ground.I use them all the time for parts but as I said you have to tell them what you want and hold on

Old if you want good parts drive up hwy. 5 nine more miles to the Bumper to Bumper Store and I will deliver them personaly each night, if they don't have them in the store.
