Quincy 325 compressor {Roger please help}

I am rebuilding a Quincy 325 compressor. I pulled apart, cleaned and installed new rings, bearings and rebuilt the head. The problem I am having is it seems that it is not pumping correctly. It took 25 min. to pump a 60 gallon tank to 125 psi. What could I have done wrong?

I'd pull the tops off of the unloader towers and see if they are seized in the unloaded position. If they are ok, install a pressure gauge in the safety valve port on the front top of the cylinder head and read the interstage pressure. If it is very low (zero to 15 psi or therabouts) your LP cylinder is not pumping.

The aluminum rings go under the unloader towers to seal them to the valve cover caps, smaller rings go under the cover nuts for the setscrews on the exhaut valves.

There should be no air coming from the line to the unloader tower while it is running.

Did you replace the head gasket? If it is blown between the two cylinders it will pump very slowly (if at all).

Do you hear air leaking while it is running?

Thank you Roger. I figured it out. I hade no pressure at the saftey valve. I fell pretty stupid. I had put the valve {washer} and spring on the discharge valve of the low pressure cylder in reverse order. It pumped up the 60 gallon tank in less than 4 min. That is alot better. I got this compresser and tank Minus a motor out of the dumpster at work. I bought a 5 hp Baldor motor and complet rebuild kit. I got about $500 in it. I think I have found out why it was thrown away the tank leaks around the weld for the saddle where the motor and compresser mounts. They tried to weld it. I have a 80 gallon propane tank that has not had gas in it for several years and I have all the plugs out of it. Would this be a bad ideal? Thanks for all the help. kfen

Hmm, I personally have no experience using propane tanks for air storage, so I will not recommend this. Others on the board have done this with success, but I feel I would be entering an area of liabilty in this regard by suggesting that it would be ok. Use your own best judgement, and make sure you can drain off any moisture from the bottom of the tank, whatever you do.

Check to see if there is any cracks in the intercooler tube. There should also be individual copper washers under each cylinder head bolt to prevent air leaks. I'd hazard a guess that a valve might not be sitting squarely inside the head.

Actually, 15 psi in the interstage is probably ok. Near zero, and you have a problem.

I forgot a few things. I have 26 psi oil pressure. I installed new brass unloader valves on the lp and hp side. I removed the small air line that goes to the unloader valve thinking my unloader valve was at fault and still it takes a long time to pump up. When I rebuild the head I installed new brass seals under the valves. In the rbuild kit there is two smaller aliminum seals. Are these used on the 325?. I could not figure out were these went. I do not remiber removing any when I disassembeled the valves.
