anyone know if there is a way to test the compression of the air compressor? Im just restoring my 1951 old bird to new condition and was wondering if there is some way i can do a compression test to find out if shes funning at top notch she sounds good but Im not sure how the rings are. if so what should the compression be on these old monsters.

Jay ,
If you can find someone with a compression testor for aircraft recriprocating engines you may be able to get an idea of condition. It is done statically with the piston held on TDC. Air is then introduced @ 80 PSI thru an orifice of a given size (I dont know what it is)The reading is then taken off of another guage which is located past the orfice.Compression readings are given referencing 2 numbers. Example: 80/74 The lower the second number is indicates wear either in valves or rings . Listening generaly detirmins where. Real simple setup if you happen to know an aircraft mechanic. A possibly safer way (Piston MUST be kept @ TDC lest you will have an air motor)than a typical engine compression testor but you still must use common sense to avoid hurting yourself.

As soon as any appreciable pressure builds in the cylinder, the exhaust valve is going to open, so it is pretty much impossible to do a compression test on an air compressor. Pump up time is what you want, and that is probably a better indicator of valve condition, than ring condition.

You can see how much pressure she'll make. You can time how fast she fills the tank from atmosphere to fully charged. It might take an ME to tell you what 105 seconds means. The local boys probably be happy to tell you how fast their CHs, Quincys, IRs and Crapsmen fill.

IR told me to time my compressor to cutoff. That's how they determine wear and when to rebuild. Going to vary by mfg. of course. Is yours still around?

If the compressor is not passing oil, they are good to go.

I think you are looking for trouble.

In an internal combustion engine, you test compression at cranking speed. Actual running compression is much higher.

On an air compressor, you would need to test the running compression and who knows what that is. All you know is that it puts out enough pressure to exceed the pressure in your tank till your high pressure cut out shuts it off.

I wouldn't do it.
