I need help with the above air compressor (circa 1974). The comp has a Dayton 1 1/2 hp motor running at 230 volts that can only bring the tank pressure up to about 20 psig. If the compressor is unloaded (ie, blowing straight through) the motor turns just fine, but once it gets a load it slows to a stop. Any ideas whether 1) the motor needs rebuilding 2) it is undersized for the compressor or 3) problem with the compressor. My understanding is the motor runs continous and the compressor disengages once up to the set pressure.

Email replies welcome!

Hi Paul, If the compresor was working just fine then started this then the motor is going bad, bearing, armature, or if there is a run capacitor replace it, or the compressor has a bad bearing? You'll need to take the motor to a electric rebuild shop and have it load tested and if the motor shows good then the compressor is bad. If you just installed it then theres to much load for the motor and you need more HP or a smaller sheave(drive pulley) providing the compressor is good.

Thanks for the help. Rechecked the wiring and found out I had only wired one leg of the 220 circuit. My bad! Works like a champ now.
