I am gearing up to do my first paint job on Ford 2N. After looking at several paint guns there seems to be two standard types (excluding the HVLP). The high performance automotive spray gun which uses around 7.0 CFM and the general purpose which uses about 4.5 CFM. My question is what is the difference in painting quality between these guns? Would it even be noticible to an amature like myself? Does the general purpose gun just paint slower? My 2 H.P. compressor is rated at 5.5 CFM @ 40 PSI so I'm thinking if there isn't much difference in painting quality maybe I should just buy the general purpose gun. I do want a nice looking job but it dosen't have to be showroom quality. I was looking at both of these guns in the Sears catalog. Any thoughts or comments out there?

Go to the forum on www.autobodystore.com where there is a wealth of info dealing with painting. Personally I have had no luck with Sears paint guns. Most guns will shoot paint but you may end up with heavy orange peel, runs, etc. CFM's are not the issue so much as quality of spray gun and being able to supply any particular gun with enough CFM's it requires. In spray guns you get what you pay for and therefore can make a big difference in results. Granted ability, skill, experience, practice, etc. all come into play. Roger Van Houten
