kerosene heater dilema

I have a 50,000 btu torpedo heater, it is a Reddy Heater brand. The problem is when i plug it in all it does is buzz like it wants to fire but does not. If i plug it in and nothing happens, ive pressed the reset button and it buzzes. Any help would be much appreciated thanks

My torpedo heater was doing the same thing! So, i took off the top cover, and cleaned the spark plug type igniter. no go! So out came the injector and i cleaned out the jets with fine wire! No go! next i took out the fuel pickup tube, made sure the filter wasn"t clogged! No Go!! RATS! I cleaned out the little filters in the back end! No GO!!! I removed the inline fuel filter! No go!!! MORE, Bigger, RATS!!! O.k.. Went to a different place to buy Kerosene! Threw out the old stuff, poured in the new stuff, and: Whoopee! It runs! momentary happiness! 5 minutes! It quit when the little button popped out!!! By this time, i was ready to go buy a new one, since they were on sale that week! Next day, i tried it again, it started up and ran--for twenty minutes! By this time the sale was over! Next day, it ran for 2 minutes! Talk about somebody in a tizzy, to put it politely! Any way, it now runs long enough to heat the garage up good, then my box heater takes over and keeps it comfy! and, the torpedo is run for a bit to catch up on the heat, then it shuts off! At least, spring isn"t too far away, and i haven"t gone goofy from that heater! by: Rustyj

Just bought 150 gal of kero in 5 gal cans with steel can for $5 per can less wifes discount of 10% for $4.50 per 5 gal plus 7% sales tax so that is less than $1 per gal, and I have 2 of the 90,000 BTU Knipco heaters that were before the company started making the ready heater version that was a cheaper version and that the 35 & 50,000 BTU models would not work with a thermostat

Used to use a salamander type heater in my garage, I got tired of the noise and upkeep. Got a 23k btu Kerosun Omni 105 type heater, made by toyotomi, and use this. It makes it comfortable to work in although not in a tee shirt. It burns 99 percent clean, and has no noise or maintainance. If I had a big area I would just use two of these. Salamander heaters are good for large areas, but you use more kerosene, and have maintainance. Just paid $2.16 a gallon for kero, (last year CT put an added 35 cent tax on kero, again ripping off the taxpayer)

You might also find mice have gotten in and cloged it up with dirt, the eye hole has to be clean and bright to see the flame, or it may have a wire chewed off, the spark plug could be just fouled out like a tractor plug

You may have bad vanes in the pump. Also the cylinder that the vanes turn in may be rusty or corroded. The vanes have to create enough air movement to suck the fuel up to the combustion chamber. If it buzzs and the motor is turning that is the spark plug buzzing. You can get the vanes and fix the pump reasonable. They are easy to work on.

Remove top shell and spin fan by hand to see if it turns free,Then plug unit in and try to spin it but BE CAREFUL!! Not only is there chance of getting cut by blades,but the igniter can give you a really nasty shock if it is the spark type.Some of them have hot surface ignition(HSI)..Bearings on motor may need lubricated,but i had one that would spin free by hand,but when plugged in the magnetic field on motor would pull the armature into field windings making motor buzz and drag..A new bearing fixed this problem and it is still working..Hope this is explainable enough to get you in the right direction, Good luck....

Vetteman,
After you have done what the others have recommended, if it still does not start, you may want to check for dirt dauber clogs. My 55,000 model had them this year and I went through the same thing. Smoke, smoke, smoke, then nocks off and waits to be reset. I knew nothing about this heater, and still don"t. But took out 2 small plastic metering type plugs on front panel and found mud clogs in one. One or both of them had a filter and/or spring and ball assembly if I remember correctly. Cleaned them both out and now runs like new. Found that these control the amount of fuel and air I think. Never had really tinkered with this thing before.

Had it running yet this season? If not, dump out the kero and go get some new stuff. If it's trying to light, just smoking a little - it's your fuel.

If it dont fire you either have a bad plug or a bad igniter/coil assembly. If ya got fire, then the fuel filter is probably plugged up with something, maybe water. Unplug and take the top shell off, is the fan and pump free.
