Howdy all,

Do any of you own or use a dumpy trailer? Any opinions on what works well and what doesn't?

I've kinda created a business up here in the Northwest cleaning up and selling small (1-10 acre)parcels after the logging companies harvest off all the large trees.

Last year I used a small track hoe and ran back and forth too the main slash pile, but this year I'm going to be running 2 or 3 crews with bobcats and sifting buckets. I've welded up two "ram" attachments for the Bobcat carriages with receiver hitches in them which will hold a 2 5/16 ball.

The plan is to haul the bobcat with attachments to the jobsite, unload, move the trailer around with the ram, fill the trailer with the bucket and then move the trailer over to a main slash pile with the ram.

I like the idea of self contained/powered lift controls on the trailers which can be operated from the bobcat seat. Further, I don't have to license/maintain/insure several dump trucks and hire guys with CDL's.

Any opinions on these trailers? I'm looking at 14 footers with 14,000 capacity.

Any and all opinions appreciated!

Scott

You want to double check your state regulations first. My state requires a CDL when pulling a trailer over 10K gvw for a business. If it's your personal use you will need a DOT medical card. Either instance need a DOT number posted on a tow vehicle over 10K. Most states are following the new Fed motor vehicle code just a matter of how fast.

NOTE: ALL this stuff has a GCVW under 26K!!!

Landscapers are getting red tagged & fined around here. Fines start at 10X the medical fee!

If you stay under 10K life is simpler!

I have had and used a dump trailer for about 5 years now. I have never had any problems with it. I use a battery booster to supplement the battery power. I have an gravel pit and maintain 2 miles of private road. I also use it for hauling top soil and firewood. It also works great for hauling bulk feed and dumping into a hopper for an auger. The maintance and cost is no where near that of a dump truck, plus there is the license and insurance issures you don't have to deal with. I also have a dump truck but I still use the trailer more. I guess it really depends on what you do and what you want.

I have a PJ dump trailer. They all look alike. 14,000 is awful heavy for a bumper pull, most trucks are 12,000 on the bumper. Mine is 14,000+ but it is gooseneck.
I do pull mine over solid fields--not plowed and not after a rain. It does go down pretty easy.
The hydaulics require a lot of juice so the batteries don't last real lonng unless you have a way of recharging while moving the trailer.

Two guys I work with own them. One has a tree business and the other uses his for yard cleanups and junking. Both complain of slow cycle times and short battery life. The hyd system is power up and down, the down pressure holds the body from tipping when loading equipt but is really slow and kills the battery twice as fast. Both have them wired to charge the battery from the tow vehicle but it can't keep up with short trips and repeated dumping. I will be looking at one this spring to see if I can change it to gravity down and rig a lock for the body. HTH :>)

those trailers won't last long off road the tires and axles and springs will fall apart in no time. for this you need heavier axles why not cut a single axle dump truck down in to a trailer and get a 4020 or a 806 and pull it with it and then you can still dump it off tractors hyd system.

better keep it on dry land !!!
I cant recall how many trailers I have seen suck and stuck good.
when the trailer out weighs the tow vehical even 4wd the vehical has to over come the rolling resistance and it doubles in soft soil or mud
A skid steer is going to be useless trying to pull 14,000 through mud even with tracks.
thats why the big boys use dump trucks with differental locks.
you will end up wanting a truck when you start to expand any way.
it not going to be much cheaper when you figure maintance, license and registration

HJP,

Thanks for the info, but i wouldn't DARE to try to move the thing with a bobcat if it was loaded heavy!

I figure the thing full of brush, branches, twigs and other crap might weigh a total of 5-6 K. i'm only getting the 14K so I can get the 14' to hold the bobcat. Whenever there is some real weight in the trailer it will be on dry land hauling gravel and the like, and being pulled with my Chev K30 dually with 454 or the duece and a half.
