Can anybody tell me a site that has plans for building your own log splitter? I have an 8hp Briggs engine to use. Is it possible to use a power steering pump to run the cylinder? Thanks.

Yes anything is possible:) but if you get the correct pump mount for your engine and a 2-stage hyd pump to match[ 9 gallon at low pressure] you will have a known source of power to size the cylinder /relief valve/tank/etc, and can ge tthe best performance you can.
All this stuff is available from Northern Tools in the satates and Princess Auto in Canada, both places have plans available. Or any hyd shop can locate and supply pieces you need, $$$$ is a question.
I suspect you will recieve lots of comments and thoughts, all are good, the hardest part is deciding what advice to follow, so Good Luck.
Good luck,

Power steering pumps are usually not very high pressure and the flow makes them slow [ slow cycle times ] Power steering doesn't need a lot of oil flow to make them work on your car. Northern Hydraulics has about everything you will need..

Check your costs! in reply to Bob02, 02-23-2005 13:31:15
I built one last summer and the cost of teh parts was as much as buying the same splitter from tractor supply all ready made. If you have parts lying around already paid for, go for it. If you have to go out and buy the pump, hoses, ram, tank, I beam, wedge, etc....it"s gonna add up.

Think I spent over a grand on mine, gave up counting after the second or third parts trip to tsc.
