Anyone else experience this.....
I bought some used Craftsman tools at various house sales. When I went to return the broken items Craftsman no longer carries the same model but ones slight smaller or lesser.

Tools in question...
24' pipe wrench (no longer available)
push type screwdrive (offered a little piece of crap in place of)
Tape measures;
1-25'w/1" wd. tape & 1-16'w/3/4" wd. tape.
Offered a 20' w/ 3/4" wd. tape & a 12' w/1/2" wd. tape, not the same quality at all.

Other gripes, now they're putting stickers on the tools in place of stamping the model numbers.
In a few years of use the sticker will be gone and then they'll tell you they can't be sure its a CRAPSMAN tool!

One of the reasons they are changing is because of people that go to yard slaes and buy broken junk for 10 or 15 cents and then expect to exchange it for new. the lifetiem warranty is to the original purchaser, soon you will have to have proof of purchase.

You know funny thing, I have never seen anywhere on their life time guarantee where it says anything about "only to the original Buyer"!!!Craftsman has always been unconditionally Guaranteed. just my 2 cents...Keith

I never feel guilty buying stuff at yard sales. I am a loyal Craftsman purchaser when I'm working on a project and need something right now. If I come across something at a yard sale and don't have it I'll buy it! I only replace if broken. As I said my loyalty is with Craftsman, but I don't think their loyal to us their customers when they start switching or discontinuing tools.

If I was heading up Sears I would have gone to that a long time ago. Try to stretch the bennies to the max and complain about cost effective results. :>(

This is an ongoing problem I am running into not only with Sears but with my tool truck brands also.Your only option is to take what's offered or keep a broken tool. I bought a Cornwell 60 inch wide tool cart and side box 2 years ago. I now need to add a top chest and side locker however, Cornwell has switched suppliers and I can't get a matching top chest or side locker. I now have to figure out whether to get another brand of top box and side locker or trade in what I have for a larger set up.

If the snap-on man gives you a hard time.you can always call the main ofice and complain. At some point you will not purchase that much from the truck and they will start to treat you like a pain in the butt.Thats when you call his boss. They will respond. If the truck comes to where you work you could have previously spent several thousand a year on the truck. They better replace broken stuff. Also Snap-on dosnt break as much as craftsman.

Have had just that experience with the local Snap On dealer. Just the threat of turning him in got satisfaction.

As I stated in another thread I just purchased a box combo from the guy who now owns his route so I know what it will take to jerk his chain and get satisfaction the next time.

I would like to say about buying any of these tools used. When these tools sell used the better names bring a premium. There is a reason for that. They have a reputation part of which is the guarentee. If the companies aren't going to back that the reputation will be ruined and the market for that brand will topple like a house of cards.

Went in with antique Craftsman, kind of nice round taper, well made calipers with the thumbsrew rusted to the threads, old maybe 1940,and came out with a new flat el cheapo $7.00 caliper. On the way home ,even though I paid a quarter at a yard sale,I felt like I should have kept the old ones and used more penetrating oil on them. The old ones looked like they cost $7.00 in 1940.

I have a set of the Craftsman professional screwdrivers I got a couple of years ago. Only says Craftsman on the handle grips and is nearly worn off now. I'm afraid they won't replace once the name is gone.

You folks need to realize one thing, Sears has changed just like all the other companies in the US and that change is for the worst when it comes to "Customer Satisfaction". They could care less about what the customer thinks nowdays, the dollar bill is more inportant. Sears is and has been sliding down hill for a long time now due to that attitude toward the Customer.
