Curtis air compressor ID - help?

I picked up an old Curtis air compressor last night (sorry - no pics yet...) and I"m trying to get an idea of what model it may be and when it might have been built. Can anyone direct me to some good resource info?

It"s a small unit, single stage, with about a 5 gallon tank under it. Flat pully, leather belt. Didn"t get the specs off the motor, but I think it"s been replaced - it just looks newer - it"s a GE, wired for 110volt. I believe the serial number on the compressor ID plate was B180, but there"s no date on the id plate. It"s an interesting compressor in that there is a "flask" shaped iron "bottle" between the compressor cylinder and the tank, and there is a small stopcock in the bottom side of this flask (presumably to drain water?)

I don"t know much about air compressors, but I love antique tools - they have a sound and a feel to them that is unique. For the $20 it set me back, I wouldn"t have cared if it didn"t even run, but this one even seems to work! (Haven"t had a chance to see what kind of pressure it might generate, yet.) I"ll try and get some pictures tonight.

Thanks for nay help!

Hi,I'm trying to reach Roger P., or anyone else that knows about antique Curtis air compressors regarding a Curtis Air compressor identification. I'm trying to locate and buy one. I can describe it, but don't know the model number. Can anyone help?

I have a Curtis compressor that is a 1938 model. Still runs good and works well. Machined v-belt grooves in the flat pulley/flywheel and mounted it on a modern tank. Look on the compressor name plate on the crankcase opposite the pulley and see if there is a model number on it. Mine was on the line above the s/n. Then post your question on here for roger P. the compressor guru. He seems to have forgotten more than lots of us will ever learn about compressors. Curtis is still in business and they have lots of parts suppliers, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of old compressor parts left around. Do a web search for Curtis air compressor parts and it will give you lots of dealer names to choose from and they can identify it by the model numbers. M ine gives almost no trouble. The one I use is a large 2 stage unit and it only runs about 900 rpms and gives good service. Gene Davis
