O/T 20LB. LP Tank To Compressed Air

I've seen conversion kits on eBay that allow you to convert the old style Propane tanks into portable compressed air tanks.

If I were to make my own conversion, does anybody know what size and thread pitch the tank itself is?

The conversion on eBay keeps the existing valve and uses an adaptor for the POL fitting. I'd rather take a pipe wrench to the tank and remove the valve all together, but don't know what threads I'd need to find for a fitting.

If you have an old cutting torch gas regulator, remove the fitting from it. it's 1/4 inch pipe with the fitting for your propane valve. Add a tee or cross or quick disconnect or whatever you want to the 1/4 inch pipe and your done.

I did that same as thurlow, but tee tapped the tank with the bottom side up so as to get the drain that jakej noted. It was 3/4" MPT.

I have some old style 20# tanks that have been thinking about putting in-line in the air piping in my barn to give my small compressor tank more system volume. To check my sanity I stopped and asked the gas-passers at the propane place about thread size and pressure capability. They said this is 3/4 NPT and the pressure rating on the tank is way beyond the 150 psi that I will be using it at.

He said he has a pile of the old tanks and pays to get them removed. He thought the air tank was a great recycling idea.

For the price that the Ebay guy wants for a conversion kit you can buy a complete supply tank with all fittings included at some of the discount tool places (Harbor Freight, Homier, etc).

If I remember it is just plain old 3/4 pipe. There are some rental stores who refill and also change out the valves. You can get a neat float type that is a real fuel guage. I have a couple of air tanks done this way but I bought a real brass fitting for LP hook up and screwed my own deal together. Over 15 years now and still fine. I also bought the tanks NEW so no stink of LP. Jeffcat

I've got a hundred # tank I've used as a (portable) air tank for about 25 years; threads in them are 3/4 inch pipe thread; don't know if the smaller ones are the same or not.....

Thanks for the info. They look about like the 3/4 water pipe we use in the barn. Guess I shouldv'e tried screwing a piece into the tank.

If thats the case, it'll be easy to make my own custom manifold from a short piece of 3/4 pipe with taps for the gauge, outlet, and shrader valve.

Just food for thought here if you're gonna make a portable air tank...

Keep the schrader valve for if you have to fill it at a gas station or someplace. But if you have a good air system in your shop, what I did on my portable tank was to plumb in a 1/4" ball valve and male quick-connect nipple. Then you just hook up your air hose in the shop, open the ball valve, and your tank's filled in about ten seconds. Sure beats sitting there for five minutes filling the tank through the schrader valve with a tire chuck. I just let the air go in until it blows the pressure relief, close the ball valve, push the pressure relief back in, unhook the hose, and go.

Oh, by the way, our local auto parts stores and farm stores both carry the kit to convert the propane tanks. You dont need to go through ebay if you dont want to.
