After living in my house for 4+ years now I need to build a back deck. I need opinions on building it and using stuff. 1. I plan on having a guy come over with a rear 3pt post hole digger and put in the holes, I would like to use a 8" diam. sonitubes for the concrete then put a 4X6 treated post sunk about 24" into the crete, (is this okay) I will use a galvanized steel post support for the sleeper joists. 2. I would like to use cedar for the top boards, I think that the new plastic has come a long way in recent years but is very expensive, I priced it about 4 months ago. (any body have opinions on the plastic top decking). the cost is about double of cedar I think. 3. I would like to use 3" diam. cedar poles for the spindles. has anybody used something different, like aluminum rails, or another wood. I want to keep the cost of the spindles at $500 or less. My deck is going to be about 250ft2 and will wrap around two sides of my sun porch.

I replaced my rotting deckboards and railing with a composite material called Trex about 3 years ago. I really like it and there is no staining required. Just powerwash it once or twice a year. It is pricy but I don't have to mess with it. Gives me more goof off time in the summer.

Finished our deck (my wife calls it a pav-e-lon) last year after working on it intermittently thru-out 2003. May have consigned it to an early failure since the posts are in concrete and water.....

Plastic decking may have improved, but a friend did the docks at his marina with 2 X 6" recycled juice boxes. They don't rot but seem much more flexible than wood when installed on 2' centres. This makes for springy walking.

Maybe this is too obvious to mention, but pressure-treated pine is a cheap decking material as long as there is no risk of family members picking up slivers from the wood. The slivers are seriously toxic. There's been trouble in this area with a few lamebrains burning the cut-offs in wood stoves, with very nasty effects upon the neighbourhood.

I've recently taken apart two old decks. One was built with B.C. red cedar and it lasted 18 years. The other used much cheaper eastern white cedar and it lasted 17 years.

BTW: That's a lovely deck, Allan.

The people below who suggested NOT setting the posts in concrete were 100% correct. They will eventually rot off right at the level where the concrete ends, there is no way around that. If you are laying down decking (say 2X 6's etc), make sure you leave a space between the deck boards. Oh I know, people say that women with high heels will get stuck, well that is unlikely since I don't think anyone wears those anymore, and if someone does get stuck, just lift them gently out of their predicament. I have seen a lot of deck rot because the boards are tight together and the moisture gets trapped in there and you know the rest of the story. I would suggest a 1/8" space minimum, maybe 3/16" to play it safe.

I would not put the posts into the concrete. There are many different styles post brackets availible. I prefer the galvanized box shaped ones which bolt to an achor bolt in the concrete.
They hold the post up off the concrete about a 1/2" and have some adjustment if you don't get your achor bolts in a perfect line.
Instead of cardboard tubes, I use 8" PVC sewer pipe. I get them from a sewer contractor, they always have short left over pieces they throw away.
I used to Trex for decking for one deck about 6 years ago, but if you are in areas where you get frost, it gets real slick. Built another last fall and used Versa-deck from Home Depot. It has great traction. I prefer the plastic materials. They seem to look better longer. If you go with a plastic material, use the proper screws.

I went the no maintenance route also. The framework is treated lumber, everything else is man made.

I would offer two comments, the first is to factor into the price of your deck the cost of stain/sealer and powerwashing every couple of years. Those $100 bills kept adding up at my last house.

If you do go with synthetic decking, look into the screws with small heads that you drive with a square bit. Dont predrill the holes and you can hammer the holes shut so the top appears almost smooth

My deck is about 700 sq ft, long thin wrap around with about 100 ft of railing.

Definetly alot of maintenance, so unless your 20 ft off the ground or like to stain it every year or two. I'd go the no-maint route or do it as a patio !

I have clear stained magahony, I love the look but the refinishing is a pain in the knees.

thanks for the comments, I will do what you guys are saying and not sink the post in concrete, I have heard that this rots the posts out too, but if the concrete is made to run the water away from the post then will it still rot? I called a place today in northern Mi. that sells cedar posts, the posts are $450 for 100 of them and $250 for delivery, looks like I will still price around.

I would forget the posts and just pour concrete tubes all the way up then use the brackets to connect tubes to joists. I guess this would depend on how tall you were doing and if visibility of the posts is a problem.

Also, if you use Ipe it will need no finish and weather to a nice gray like weathered teak furniture.

Ipe, Ipe, Ipe . . . Don't waste your time with anything else.

My opinion.

A word about that plastic decking! Check the fire rating on those products! some of them aren't safe! Our fire Co., of which i'm a member, got called out at midnight to a house fire! The fire started in their lawn tractor parked under the deck! If it hadn't been there, i don't think the damage would be so bad, but the house had to be completely rebuilt, because the decking boards caught on fire, and then the fire spread to the kitchen and garage! By the time we got there, the fire had a good start into the main floor, by way of the deck and some of the windows! So, let this be a warning! The other posts here in this spot are all very good. Heed them, and you'll have a good experience with your deck! by: Rustyj

I'm with Carol on not setting the post in the concrete. There's a special made bracket and bolt setup for holding the post up off the concrete. I've seen post set in concrete rot away. Check it out at Lowes/Home Depot. Ceder spindles sounds interesting. All the deck boards I see are redwood, cut with an ever so slight arch on the top so water drains off and also has a couple of groovs in the bottom to help prevent warpage.

How high off the ground will the platform be?

How long will the span be?

Are you planning on flashing the band board where it attaches to the house? If so, you need galvanized flashing.

How deep is the frost line where you live?

What do you mean by "sleeper" joist? Sleeper implies that the joist is laying with the wide side against a concrete (usually) floor.

If you have high winds where you live, don't rely soley on joist hangers to hold your joists. Bolt a support board to the posts under the ends of the joists.

Use hot dip galvanized fasteners and screws that are approved for use in ACQ.

I also endorse the brackets and bolt arrangement on top of the poured footings. I have a large wooden deck on my house and it is one PITA to clean and stain every 3 years or so. My buddy just completed his new deck with the plastic/composite boards and he spent a fortune on it. His goal was zero maint. and I guess only time will tell. He did complain a lot about warped components and having to make special jigs to help align some of the parts. He just finished it before winter snows hit so he hasn"t had time to really enjoy it.

All I know is that this stuff is really expensive and requires some extra ingenuity to install. He also had some materials on back-order at Lowe"s for a while. Demand is high I guess.

Looks great, Allen. Ya know, I'm gonna build a new home this summer. Maybe you could come on over to the great state of Kansas and practice some of those capentry skills on my home? Pay is low, but I'll provide great food, ole time yarns and plenty of beautiful Kansas scenery!

Hey Allen, you may want to put a couple posts under that overhang. It's a little too long for the joists. FWIW, the rule of thumb is the length of the overhang should not exceed 4 times the heighth of the joists.

Ex. A 2x8 joist cannot overhang more than 29 inches. 7.25 x 4 = 29

One more thing I would suggest: In snow area , don't have the deck at the same level as the door. Keep it down 3 or 4 inches. Gap between house and deck is also another good idea , which I noticed Doug had done. I normally leave gap of 1-1/2 - 2". In my opinion , this is much better than having plate nailed directly on to house. Otherwise , looks good Dug!!

Yeah I second that. Either set on top of concrete or go through it and stick out the bottom. Eventually that post will shrink some and allow water to set in the hole and rot your post. It may take some time but it will happen.

I have a couple of pallets made out of that plastic wood. They are very strong and do not rot but are extremely slick when wet.
If you will have to shovel this deck in the wintertime do yourself a favor and use screws on the top. Nail heads that stick up in the wintertime will break plastic shovels and bend up metal ones.

The plastic or the "Tough Board" type stuff (really fancy partical board) looks good for 2-3 years but begins to warp, get soft, and make you wish you used real wood. What were the dimensions of your deck? 250 x 2? Is this a covered deck or open? Be sure to seal the attachement points to your house and flash it. I spend a lot of time around here on repairs to homes that are caused by water leaking into the wall via deck supports. Cedar seems to be working fine, it might be a good idea to seal it every 3-4 years, especially if it is an open deck.

With todays pressure treated (I am asumming you are going to use it for framing lumber) corrosion is a major factor. Use a beam under your floor joists and hangers that are double coated or stainless steel. I would also use stainless nails or screws with a coating made for this application. I would use the cedar I have heard lots of negitive feedback on the plastic. FWIW
