The cabinet shop where I work the most requested wood is oak followed closely by hickory. We have a job comeing up that combines oak and hickory in a natural finish. Cherry makes a beautiful piece of furniture and is also very popular. We recently built a rather large set from alder which was very nice. Of all woods I prefer Walnut and my most cherished piece of furniture is an old chest made of walunt with all hand cut joints. One board 21" wide.

You still have Butternut around you? It all got wiped out here years ago... so grandpa tells me anyway. I have been told it is "White Walnut"

Is coffeebean the same as Kentucky coffeetree? Cut a couple of logs out of one that blew down last year; been waiting to saw it since I couldn't decide what I was gonna use it for..... ...

thurlow: I think they are the same species. Different areas use different names for the same species. I have heard it called Carolina coffeebean(or coffeetree)also. A lot of those trees are shakey and the lumber tends to seperate along the grain, but if yours are sound the lumber is kind of a light pinkish brown, and contrasts nicely with walnut. I built a coffee table framed of coffeebean with two walnut inlays.
It came out nice.

Thanks for the info; I'll probably just flat saw it into 5/4 planks and find a use for it. My brother does a good bit of turning; he can always glue it up, if he needs something thicker. The second log had several good-sized limbs, so I hope for some nice figured lumber out of it.....

Ash is one of my favorites, and I like almost any hardwood that has some character. I have some cottonwood that is absolutly beautiful. Another that is georgeous is Big Leaf Maple burl. Not much of that around tho. It only grows in the Northwest.

I have never seen cotton wood used. Theres a valley not to far from me and a town in the bottom. I rember a few years ago a parking lot has 5 BIG! cotton woods MASSIVE like 6 feet arounf the truck and idont know how high... had a election and the new mayor of that town had them cut down so u can drive though there. alot of people complained and he soon resigned LOL but there were nice.. What does cotton wood look like? is it easy to work with or harder then oak... Im currently building a dinning room table for my brothers weddign im using ash as the slids for the leaf...

Andrew: Cottonwood is not generally used to build furniture as it is unstable(changes shape when humidity increases or decreases), but I ran a small sawmill for years and ocasionally came across some that was heavily figured. It was caused by tension, such as a tree that grew leaning or a large limb. I saved those boards(as well as any other odd looking boards, of any species) and build small pieces from them, for instance a memento box about ten by twelve by four inches.
When it is finished the figure in the wood is beautiful.

Cottonwood is a fairly soft hardwood. We had some wagon sideboards cut from it years ago.

my personal favorite is a nice wormy chestnut it looks pretty sharp id say next to that a good maple, then again cherry looks real nice. Oaks pretty easy to get in these parts and a nice strong furniture wood.
