I like good tools. Not the cheap import crap. What do you experts think is the best out there, your opinion keeping in mine cost, resale, looks, and being comfortable working with. I'm thinking of a set from 1/4 inch to 1 1/4 inch. Thanks

I use comb. wrenchs every day at work. craftsman, or crapsman wrenchs just don't hold up to everyday use. The jaws spread over time, and the box end wears out. I don't feel like running to sears every other month. I've used my Snapon set for over 5 yrs. now. No problems. Drop a crapsman wrench on the floor, and listen to the clanking sound, Then drop a Snapon, and listen to that high piched ring. That's the sound of a high quality tool.

Like he said - buy what you are comfortable with and can afford. I have several brands, Bonney, C-man, S-K, Thorson - all are good. I even have several Tiawainese that are good. I stay away from snap-on (or snap-OFF) - only good thing about them is their warranty - I've broken more of them than even el-cheapo Tiawian stuff. Just my opinion.

This is not a car you are buying. What does resale or looks have to do with the functionality of a wrench set. Even the nicest, newest wrench set won't sell for half of its new price, so resale is not in the equation. And looks, well, whether polished or satin finish or black industrial, they will have the same function and nearly the same feel. Snap-on for instance makes their combination wrenches polished, and I think they still market the same wrenches with their blue point name on them in a satin finish and black oxide finish. The polished are slippery and harder to hold, but clean up nicely. Beyond that they all three have the same tolerance fit on the head of the bolt.

You don't buy tools on the emotion of looks or the possibility you will have to sell them.

Lots of good advice on tools. Love Snap on for the CREAM of what you can hold in your hand. I do shopping at the flea markets during the summer months. In South Jersey we have a couple of big ones and I have gotten some REAL deals. Anything Sears you can take back and get a new one for one third the cost. Also find SK and Snap-on, Williams , you name it. Found a 15 ton hydrallic jack for $8.oo and only needed the handle and a little jack oil. Emglo K15A-8P compressor for $130.oo with the front wheel missing. This is a dual voltage twin cast iron pump unit. Original cost was $700.oo+. Spring is almost here so keep flea markets in mind! Jeff, you hit the nail on the head about Flea Markets. I spend my weekends (& weekdays, when I can get away) shopping them. Good tools for pennies on the dollar. Bought a bunch of Proto Impact sockets for a dollar each last week. I also buy antiques & collectables at fleas to resell... that is a nice little side income. Something I have found a lot of lately is old wrenches, ones marked with tractor & plow companies. Lots of them for only a dollar or 2 each..

I would buy the Craftsman fully polished professional wrench set. They"re strong, clean up easily, and their boxends feature off corner engagement. Their balance and feel are good too. I don"t care for regular Craftsman wrenches though. I have sets from all of the tool truck brands and for the money, the Craftsman set is hard to beat.

Go to ebay, tool section, craftsman tools and or S&K tools, they have the sets your looking for. Get a Craftsman & S&K catalog, to compair prices to make sure you don't bid higher then you can get paying retail at Sears. There are lots of sets so keep bidding until you get the set you want at the best price, OH these are new tools.

I'll go against the grain, SK. Not quite as pricey as Craftsman, American made with a lifetime warranty. Snapon are excellent wrenches, and for a PROFESSIONAL mechanic are well worth the money. Problem is I've lost more 1/2" and 9/16" wrenches then I'll brake or wear out.

I like your choice of SK, but if you think they are cheaper than Crapsman, get me a set or two. SK Professional 5/16 to 1-1/4 is over $180. Crapsman 3/8 to 1-1/4 is $79. Combination wrenches from Snapon, Mac or Matco are overpriced for the value. Sets comparable to what I have listed are probably $400 or so from those sources.

I"ve found I can break any brand, if I put a long enough cheater bar on it while I jump up and down on the end of that. So far Craftsman is the best wrench for the money that I"ve found.

SNAPON....SNAPON....SNAPON.. Nothing like a SNAPON tool.. If you divide the cost of SNAPON
by the number of years you will be wrenching..the cost is very affordable, beside you can will them to your son or daughter or grandchildren. What better remembrance than your SNAPON wrenches

I just paid $11 for a 5/32 hex key socket in 1/4" drive from Snap On. Holy sh*t. They aren't easy to find and I wanted one. So I paid the price, but man..... .....

Most guys it appears like Craftsman for the price, but I tell you, when I want a tool to perform the way it is supposed to, I don't want to have to run to Sears to get a replacement. I have a set of Proto (shiny ones), and haven't broke one yet. I bought one set of Craftman metric set. The 10 MM rounded off removing a sheet metal screw, and another out of the same set snapped off a jaw removing a hydraulic fitting

over the years I have snap-on, craftsman, JH Williams, proto, Blackhawk. plus a variety of mix and match. I liked the williams, but more costly than craftsman. No problems with any of them. I was at the local TSC a week ago, they sure got some nice LQQKIN TITAN wrenches, of course made in tiawan, but they look nice. Especially the 2 headed ratchet wrenchs, got a nice grip, but I dont know about durability. 12.95 each. I didnt check the warranty either.

I have 3 sets of hand tools. Wrenches, ratchet sets, etc.

I carry one set in my service van for general day-to-day service work. They are mostly used and imports that I acquired over the years.

second set is in my shop tool cabinet. These are mostly CRAFTSMAN., bought new . Now they are about 35 yrs. old. Broke a couple of em over the years and Sears replaced them free.

3rd set: Polished "BLACKHAWK's". That is the final set that a fella sorta collects and probably will never use. You know, them purchases that is hidden from the wife and family. Good Possibility will "will this set to my daughter, some day", as soon as I can afford to finish the collection. Never had to replace any of 'em.

So, after 60 yrs, expect to have 3 sets.

Hope this helps.

Hi, For the money I think Craftsman is the best your gonna find. Plus they have the lifetime warranty and any Sears store will replace it with no questions asked. If you wanna spend some serious cash Snap-on, Mac or Matco have excellent stuff also. If you are looking for some line wrenches or crow foot wrenches I would spend the extra money and get the Snap-on stuff, They don't seem to spread or open as easily as the Craftsman does. JMHO

Aww man! I just bought some of the nice purdy Craftsman Professional line wrenches. I hope that they work as nice as they look. They seemed pretty heavy duty, though. Looked kinda like SK line wrenches.

I agree. Craftsman is hard to beat for the price especially when their stuff is on sale. It is a USA tool and can take it back. I've not had any problem with them.
