Have a question about a cold running GM 4.3 v6,there is a strong clicking sound, would that be lifters and can they be adjusted or need replacement? After engine is warm the noise is gone.Thankyou for any opinions, Dan

A mechanic friend had a cure for sticky lifters. he'd take a weighted plastic hammer, and hit each valve assembly as it was going up and down, with a sharp, heavy hit! He'd do this several times! It would tend to drive out any dirt that was plugging up the oil passages in the lifters! It worked for him and it worked for me--saved lots of work! by: Rustyj

Went through six of those engines in 40,000 miles due to incompetent machine shop work, assembly, installation and a joy ride by the apprentice mechanic.

Install new thermostat. Warm up to operating temp. Add quart of engine flush. Let idle 15 minutes. Change oil & filter. Use Mobil 1 10W30. Drive about 1000 miles, change filter & oil again. Probably having some some sticking lifters, crud build up, and possible piston slap.

GM had a recall on the 4.3 awhile back.it was for a tensioner on the timing chain.check with your dealer.it gave basically the same noise, and failed to keep the chain tight.the recall was for 93 up i believe

Some of the old chrysler V8's had noisy lifters on start up after sitting overnight, but only if the oil needed to be changed. Changing the oil solved the problem. Someone told me the oil holes in the lifters were too small.

Valve train. See TSB 376006 issued 12/1/03. My 1992 GMC 350 (5.7) did the same thing, but dealer could never hear it. Now I'm deaf and can't hear it either -- That was 70000 miles ago. TSB only applied to the 4.3 anyway.

My chev 350 has a nasty cold start knock, ie piston slap. Not there on a warm start, but the first mile below 45 degrees F you would swear it was a direct inject diesel. Chev says it is normal. I wanted an abnormal 350 like I had been buying for 30 years. Oh well.

if you dont want to buy a stethascope just use a screw driver and put your ear to the end. just dont get the stethascope or screw driver near spark plug wires probably would make it run real rough at least for awhile. but i would recommend again a good oil flush also sometimes called engine flush. it will help remove years of "gunk" and "crude" build up on lifters sticky valves etc stuff works well try that simple and wont hurt anything even if it doesnt fix it.

Use a mechanics stethoscope and listen to the engine cold when ticking. It will help locate the problem (lifter, timing chain etc). They don't cost much I got mine at sears.

You dont mention the year model, miles, but yes it is probably the lifters. Seems some time ago I read an article on some having that problem. Most recommend either 5 or 10/30 oil. I had a new one that smoked on startup from day one. Bad seals. Depending on the mileage, but I have seen guys use shalers rislone as an additive and cleared them up. But they are probably leaking down when it sets over nite.

May have to consider some Lucas oil, fella was telling me about it.Might be helpful for this condition.Likely not worth an engine job. Dan

Also check the timing chain for wear, the 4.3 V6 is hard on chains. A buddy had a 4.3 in an astro van that developed what he and a chevrolet mechanic thought was noisy lifters. They replaced those expensive roller lifters without fixing the noise. A few hunderd miles later the worn timing chain finally slapped and wore a hole on the timing chain cover causing an oil leak. They had to replace the chain/sprockets/cover and seems to me some sort of chain tensioner, not sure on the tensioner.

Now you have ME worried. I've noticed a bit of a tick the last few morings...but it's been around 30 degrees here lately. Never noticed it when it was below 20 a month or so ago. My '91 4.3 has 202,000 miles on it now...and i've never given a thought to checking that chain. I would assume that if i notice a lot of play on it that I should look into replacing it? Might be a thing to check before I do a 3 hour interstate drive this Friday!!

Boss just replaced a timing chain in his 4.3 service van @ 162,000 miles.
