Hey folks, thanks for all the great suggestions on my low oil pressure 92 F-150/302. I dropped the pan, cleaned the screen and replaced the pump - no joy, still gets pretty low, like 5lbs or so and is starting to rattle now. I am also getting antifreeze in the oil - I didn't run it much or hard, but something cracked or gave. I was in disbelief that a 92k motor would be worn out, but I guess if you never change the oil (prior owner), you can wear things out pretty quickly.

Rather than waste any more money, I am going to replace the motor. I am going to get a new short block and not take a chance on used. Any experience out there with Jasper or others?

Thanks, Tip

Jaspers' good. Had one in a 86 GMC. It was my salt ride, 3/4 ton 4 wd. It was already in the truck when I bought it . Used it 8 years, good service. Course the oil was changed. Sounds like thats a lost art now days don't it .That thing started if you just looked at the key.Yellowdog

I am going to get a new short block and not take a chance on used. Go with a long block and then you will not have used heads. Its not uncommon to spend 300 to build a worn out set of heads. Then warranty will cover 'bout the hole engine and they kin not blame yer heads for a problem

I now agree - did a little checking and the long block is only about $200 more -

Thanks all - I'll let you know how I make out.

My son has a 97 F-150 w/v-6. Same thing happened to his. Seems like Ford had a problem with this engine and the water pump set-up. Would leak radiator water into the crankcase and loose the bearings. Ford actually had a technical service bulletin to the dealers to fix this. He had to repalce the engine, he found out about the TSB, pushed the dealer and they ended up giving him the engine and he paid the labor-1600 vs. about 3500. He found out about the TSB on a ford f-150 website forum.

Tip, Jasper is as good as you get from a production
rebuilder , but at least they stand behind their
mistakes. Production rebuilders all rebuild
lifters ( regrind the face and clean the insides),
regrind the cam shaft. Items that your local
machine shop doesn't do and would be run out of town if he did . Most engines done by ford authorized rebuilders
are bored .040 and there is not the option to do
it again. Many have reground valve stems and guides put in to match ,regrinding takes off the
chrome plating that is on the stem to make it
wear longer. To replace a valve in one of those
heads , you will bore out their under size guide,
replace it with a proper one ,then put in a new
valve. I told you in your first post that 302's need bearings at 80+K miles , I see them often.

About 3 yrs. ago I had a hydraulic valve lifter shatter in my 302 eng. which is in my 1980 e-150 service van. Wasn't bad though, I had almost 250,000 miles on the orig. engine.

I replaced the engine with a re-manufactured 302 which I got from O'Reilly Auto Parts because I was in Pensacola, FL when it broke. The new engine (new to me) was remanufactured by one of their vendors, ADK engines whose website is ADK.com.

Adk was able to inform me about the re-man. about the crankshaft, cam shaft, etc. and the tolerences in the re-man engine that I was about to purchase thru O'Reilly's.

The 302 that I wound up with had a 10 thous' grinding on the crank, 10ths on the cam, and 10 on the block.

So far I have 50,000 on the re-man with absolutely no problems. I consider ADK a good outfit. If you go their route, the key person there is Mr. Richard Ingram they have a 800 phone number: 1-800-843-3289

You should check with him about any questions that you may have about their product. He will need the serial number of the engine that you plan on putting in, obtain the serial number off the block before accepting the block from O'Reilly's, along with the VIN of your truck.

With the re-man that I received by request from O'Reilly's, I am able to rebuild it again, if I live long enough. 40ths. is the max rebore for the 302 block.

Hope this helps. John,PA

Hope this helps.

I used the wrong initials above. The engine rebuilding co. is ATK, not ADK. Sorry 'bout dat.

Thanks for the follow up. Many times we are left hanging. this way we all learn. My guess is the antifreeze was the reason. Scrap the whole thing.
