Mapp Gas Torch

Has anyone had any experience with the bernzomatic Mapp gas / Oxygen torch. You are suppost to be able to cut bolts and braze with. I only have small jobs in mind and maybe heating the odd stubborn bolt. The tanks on these are the same as your small plumbing propane tanks. A friend has a large oxy/actylene for any larger jobs.

If you ONLY have a very small job, it will work.(jewelery) The Ox tank only last 7 or 10 minutes and cost too much. I have one and found it to be a waste of money. Dont count on cutting anything. I went through a few Ox bottles on a project and swore off if it after that and bought real Ox/Ac tanks for the torch I already had. The money I spent on oxygen on that project could have gone into those shorty tanks. If you want to heat and braze and dont want to buy ox/ac torch setup, you'd be better off buying an air/acetylene torch like plumbers use. Whatever you do, keep in mind the money you spend on the Mapp/Ox torch will be beter spent on a real torch and you'll be happier with it.

I have used mapp for close to 45 years for cutting and some brazing. I set the map a 5 pounds and never set the oxygen above 20 pounds. Anything over a 20 pound setting on the oxygen just blows the oxygen away. I have no problem cutting 1/2 plate at this setting. I have never noticed extra oxygen use with mapp over acetylene, but it sure takes a lot less mapp for the same amount of cutting. Almost every time a new man uses this setup that has used a acetylene rig before I can explain this, they cranks up the oxygen pressure. Then I get to order up an fresh tank of oxygen.

I bought one recently to help get off stubborn, rusted bolts. The problem is I use up an entire tank of oxygen just getting one bolt heated up, and that gets expensive. I'm going to get one of the Genreco carry-around oxy-acetylene outfits.

Hi Gregg,

Don't confuse Oxy/Gas combinations with a Air/Gas mix. Pure Oxygen greatly increases flame tempature.

Example: Propane/Air = 2825�F


Acet/Oxy= 5900�F

Propane/Oxy= 4580�F

Propaylene/Oxy= 5900�F

Mapp/Oxy=5300�F

I've used Mapp/Air with my Benzomatic torch that works well for some applications but not welding.

Bought one as a teen..... almost 30 years ago. I had all kind of projects planned to do with it, until I discovered that that 5 dollar oxygen bottle only lasted several minutes. At that time, I was working all weekend for less than twenty dollars. Losing proposition..... ...

That is exactly the comment I've heard about them from lots of people. You'll spend a whole bunch for the oxygen bottles and they always run out right in the middle of the project.

Ive got one, there OK but burn out small o2 tanks quickly as the other posters stated. Id be happy to sent it to you for $15 if you want it. I never use it.
