I have a chance to buy a 13' no till grain drill with 6.5" spacing for very little cash- about scrap price($300) but it is way too heavy for my tractor. Suggestions for either cutting it down or removing some units to lighten the load? How much weight will I have to maintain on each unit for no till to still work? I have seen 6 row planters converted to 2 row but didn't get a response from the guy that once offered them.

If this is that Marliss drill you posted about on the other board . . . no it can"t be narrowed very easily because that would mean cutting down the boxes, the frame, shortening the shafts, etc. You could remove some openers from either end, and make partitions in the seed box so that those holes with the removed openers don"t get any seed. You"ll still have the overhang to deal with. I do know why the drill is selling so cheap. Marliss drills didn"t perform well in no-till conditions. Poor penetration and seed placement. They did work OK in min-till or conventional where there was some soil already loosened up.

None of the grain drills I'm familiar with (obviously, I haven't seen them all) have separate "units" that could be removed; can't imagine any way to cut them down. Many planters are easily converted, but drills..... ..don't think so..... .....
