no spark

I have a New Holland 425 that I just put a new engine into and can't get any spark at the plugs. Checked the coil with a multitester and its getting 12 volts on both the positive and negative posts with the key in the "ON" positon. When I crank the engine with the tester on either post it drops off 1 or 2 volts to about 10. There is no spark coming from the coil wire when I put it on the block and crank the engine. I tried a brand new coil and get same results. Any input would be much appreciated.

Dave

Rereading your original post, it sounds like your points are working properly. The only thing I can think of is that the case of the coil is not properly grounded to the block as I believe the HV return is through the case.

Is that the New Holland 425 engine? That is a fairly new engine and I thought it used electronic ignition instead of points. Is it the standard Ford electronic ignition?

Randy, sorry-I meant a "new" rebuilt engine. It is a Wisconsin VH4D with a conventional ignition system from roughly the late 70's (?)

Thanks much to everybody who responded, I have printed out your suggestions and am headed back out today to see what I can do.

Dave

That is what I thought, I did not think you would be repacing a big 425 engine. It sounds like your points are not adjusted right and never closing or a poor connection to points. Did you get new distributor or have to use the old one?

Found it, the brand new coil wire was no good. I swapped it with the old one and she fired right up.
Thanks for the help.

Dave

Dave – Something’s wrong in the primary circuit between the coil “-“ and it’s ground point inside the distributor. Check for a loose or broken wire, breaker points gapped too wide (so they are not closing), dirty contact point surfaces, etc. Also check to see that distributor shaft is turning - there will be no spark if it is not!

Note: If the primary circuit is being made, with the engine stopped and the key on your meter should show 10 - 12 volts between the coil “+” terminal and ground, but only a few tenths of a volt between the coil “–“ and ground.

Bob M wrote, "but only a few tenths of a volt between the coil “–“ and ground." You would only see low voltage at this point if the points were closed when the engine stopped. If you short across ther points with a screwdriver, the voltage should approach zero.

You might have a bad high voltage coil wire.

You are absolutely correct - the points have gotta be closed or shorted across for the voltmeter test to work. Good catch!

The side of the coil connected to the points should go to 0 volts when the points close. make sure the distributer is getting a good ground, and doesn't have a layer of paint between it and the engine. Also I've seen several posts lately about many new points coming with some type of coating on the faces that has to be removed before they will work.
