I just bought a older 3/4 inch drive sockets set off a older gentleman this weekend. Evrything says craftsman on it, however it says 'taiwan' on the sockets. He said he bought it from sears maybe 10 years ago, had good luck with it and now has no need for it. Keep in mind it says 'craftsman' and not 'sears' so its not a cheap companion knock off. Kinda puzzled as its a OLDER set and it says craftsman. As long as if it breaks, they replace it right? thought this was kinda weird. What do you think guys?

Thanks for the help guys, I kinda figured it was something along those lines. He seemed like a pretty honest older guy, bought the set because he had was a contractor a while back and didnt use it a whole lot, plus he had other tools for sale as well, so I didnt figure he was out to get me. As far as sear's warranty goes, if they whine about giving me a warranty, I'll have to make a big scene, lol. Thanks again for help.

Taiwan-made Craftsman 3/4 in drive socket set in reply to Mike from cny, 02-13-2005 22:00:51
Mike --

Sears imported some of their Craftsman-brand 3/4 inch drive socket sets from Taiwan in the early to mid 1980's, about when they were importing some Craftsman-brand plier sets and adjustable wrench sets from Japan.

As far as I know, Sears didn't sell the imported Craftsman-brand tools individually, but only in sets. The plier and adjustable-wrench sets were featured in the weekly newspaper ads for about half the price of the equivalent sets of US-made tools.

Most of C-Man tools are made overseas (like everything else). I have a few, but found that Sears will sometimes balk on replacing them. Used to be that you took PIECES of your C-Man tools into Sears, and they'd replaced them no questions asked. Now they ask. Especially with rachets and other tools with small parts. At least their not Snap-Off.

S.K. has been real fussy about replacing ratchets for quite a while. I broke a Craftsman breaker bar last year and when I went to the C store to have it replaced the young lady I talked to (yes, she DID come out of lady's wear)was real appologetic because they did not have my bar in stock, so she sheepishly brought one that was a lot longer. I accepted the longer one and walked happily out the door.

I've got what sounds like the same set [red metal box] about 12-to-15 years old.I don't use it a lot but haven't had any problems, and sometimes use cheater pipes up to 6 feet with it.
My understanding is that if it's got CRAFTSMAN on it it will be made good.

I have a lot of Craftsman tools, and yes, some were made in Taiwan. I can still remember buying a set of Craftsman pliers many years ago only to find them engraved "Taiwan" on them. Since them I see it a lot on Craftsman tools with that on them. They will replae them if broken.

How come AJ Foyte is telling everone on the commercials "All Craftsman tools are made in USA or right here in America." I know just by looking at my Craftsman exhaust pipe expander its got to be Taiwan.Sometimes I can tell Taiwan products just by the low quality cardboard.Thats why professionals spend more for Snap -on and Mac .AJ you are lying to us.Yes AJ we can tell the imported junk tools you endorse.

My 3/4 set has USA stamped on each piece. You should be ok for warranty since it does say Craftsman on it.Ask for a manager and make a scene if the clerk balks at a warranty claim. However, be warned that Canadian Craftsman is different than the Craftsman branded tools sold in the USA. The stuff sold in Canada is all Chinese made and different in appearance to the Danaher produced, US made stuff and I have heard of people having problems getting it warrantied. Ebay is loaded with people living close to Canada and selling Craftsman tools that appear different. The only Craftsman branded hand tools (NOT power tools)I have seen with china on them are the small electronic pliers. As with all purchases, buyer beware.
