I have been mig welding for only the past couple of months and I seem to be going through alot of tips. Alot of times when I start the arc, the wire burns back into the tip or welds itself on the end of the tip. Spend most of my time getting the wire out of the tip. I have tried all kind of different adjustments and still have the same problem. It is a Panasonic welder, using .035 wire and a 1.4mm tip. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi worm,

If thats not a typo on the contact tip size, 1.4mm, then that is your problem as your orifice is too large for .035 wire letting the wire short to the inside of the tip.

The wire comes in constant contact with the inside of the bore and where it picks up current to make a weld.

With a larger orifice bore then the wire is not in solid contact and arcs to the bore thus sticking or balling inside the bore.

When changing electrode wire size, always check for the correct contact tip size as well check the drive rolls are correct for the wire size.

The drive rolls as well as the contact tips are marked for the electrode wire size with the correct amount of clearance.

Example: Using a electrode wire size of .035, then the drive rolls and contact tip will be marked .035

you didn't say if you were using anything on your tip before welding. It is a necessity. Go to welding store and buy a jar or can of tip nonsticking gunk
