I know this is a long way from Antique Tractors or Tools but I am the owner of a crawler-loader from about 1950 (Tractomotive ST-5) and lots of tools and equipment so maybe I can be forgiven one transgression.

Also, this forum has some of the best information I have found anywhere on the web. Good people, lots of knowledge, nice interaction.

No doubt within this august group there are a number of Dodge Cummins Diesel owners (fanatics to some), particularly First Generation ('89 thru '93) people. This is our 4th First Generation Dodge Cummins. Grandpa has 300K and is still working around the property (though semi-retired).

Anyway, on New Truck (a recently acquired cherry 92, 250, 4x4, extended cab with 133K), the Getrag 5 speed has started slipping out of 5th gear usually while decelerating, but occasionally under light load or when re-accelerating. It started a few days ago while pulling a light RV trailer a few miles, but had been fine before. Now it slips out when pulling trailer or not. Slight forward pressure on the shifter will keep it from slipping out, but there is movement in the shifter even then. Once in a great while it does the same thing in reverse or second. I drained the oil and there was a little gold dust and some really tiny steel that was attracted to a magnet. The total amount couldnt have been more than the material in a common office staple ground very fine. The PTO covers / inspection plates had been removed at least once judging from the blue gasket sealer. Opening them didnt tell me a thing couldnt see far enough up and forward to see the 5th / reverse shifters or gears. I refilled with Rotella 15--40 engine oil (though the manual recommends 530 I live in warm climate) and overfilled by one pint. My efforts didnt make any difference. What next?

Been There Done That!! in reply to LeMaverick, 02-11-2005 15:49:43
First off, the 15-40 is the WRONG oil for this tranny, and it will soon do even more damage!!! You NEED to put 5-30 "Synthetic" in it!!!! It's more than just the weight that's a problem, it also the aditives in the oil!!!

Secondly, your Getrag is on it's way out, plan on replaceing it!!! Yes, it can be fixed, but odds are you will be "fixing" it again and again!!! I'm sorry to say, these trannys just aren't up to the task, and are "known" to be a weak poor design!!!

I got fed up with mine, and replaced it myself with a NV4500 that's MUCH stronger, and this one will last behind the Cummins!!! There's kits you can buy so it's a bolt in job.... The NV4500 is what Dodge went to after the Getrag.

And, it's NOT the 5th gear nut someone posted here that's the problem!!!!

Robert

Sounds to me that there are some bearings getting lose and that the blocking rings are about gone., And by the way over drive is in the tailshaft housing and you should not tow in 5th only in 4th . I ran one of them in my 88 F350 ford with a hopped up 460 and toted a 28 ft. goose neck for 200000 miles and the only thing that i ever ate was u/joints and one ring and pinion because the crush spacer crushed tomuch i never run 5th when i was hooked to the trailer even empty

Hi LeMaverick,

Sounds like the typical driver with there hand constant on the gear shift knob.

The new trannys seam to use a shift fork with brass $tits on the shift fork face that wear off when slight pressure is put on the gear shift.

Pull the tower and see how the shift fork looks.

I've also seen a couple different manuals that had a shifter problem and not allowing it to fully engage the gears. One was the rubber boot over the trans. ?? Hope you find it.

Well I can't help you at all, other than I'm glad you asked. I asked about my clutch earlier this week and sure am thankful for the answers I got. Good luck with your tranny-

Lots of people have cussed that 5-speed Getrag..... with good reason; mine has almost 200K , much of it under big loads, and hasn't missed a lick, although it's always in the back of my mind. Go over to the TurboDieselRegister web site and poke around. May have to subscribe to ask questions, but I think you can check out the forums without doing so. They publish a great magazine for Dodge/Cummins owners, although it's kinda pricey.

I would suspect a bent or worn shifter fork, OR maybe sychronizer. Gold dust is probably worn brass or bronze bearings/bushings.

When a manual tranny is jumping out of gear, besides the obvious things like wear in the shift collar splines for that gear, check for a bad pilot bearing in the flywheel or bad transmission bearings.

If the transmission mounting bolts are loose (engine-to-bellhousing or transmission-to-bellhousing), and the tranny is moving around under load, that will also cause it to jump out of gear.
