Lincoln SA-200 Weak Spark - Mike - NY take a look

Mike, I posted before but I don't think you ever saw it. I have an SA-200 also. I have a simple question for you. When you try to strike an arc with the welder does it rev up? Or does it stay at the same rpms.

It should rev up unless it doesn't spark

Yes it should. Mike was asking lower down about why he had a weak spark. I'm wondering if it's reving up. When I first got mine it was not reving up when I tried to weld. I had to play with the automatic idler. I'm wondering if he's got the same problem.

I have at times had a problem with my old lin. weld and have found I needed to clean the arma ture/brushes. my welder is very old its a lin. 225 hand start and works welll it I take the time to play wit hit a little

Sorry didnt see the post. I tried it again a couple night ago. First I played with the coarse adjustment knob, (well the switch, both knobs are gone.) I had to break it loose with a pair of vice grips. It still has all 5 detents. I put it on the "max power" detent. I tried welding and got a faint orange spark. As far as the auto idler, it doesnt work, however when the engine is running it seems to rev up on its own to what sounds like roughly 1500 rpm. Tried all sorts of different settings on the switch. My boss suggested one of the contacts might be "welded" togather in the switch, making it hard to break loose. (excuse the pun). So far its one BIG generator with the 110v outlet working..lol. Is there a good way to check to see if any generator componets have failed? I"ll have to brush up on my terminology so I can figure out exactly what everyones talking about. About 6 years ago I worked at a small engine repair shop where I did some work on small generaters (coleman generac devilbis etc) but if it didnt generate, then we put a new rotor and stator in it, but I"m still trying to learn this stuff. Sorry to get long winded. Thanks for the help guys.

Mike, How do you know your reving at 1500 RPM? Check the idler. There is a kind of lever that you can toggle back and forth. If you play with it and it revs up then you have found the problem. Also there is a hole that you can stick a 1/4" bolt in that will hold it at idle or full speed. If the idle is completely inoperable you can manually set the speed.
