hyd. pressure guage hook up - proper way

Hi All- got a question about the correct way to use/install a hyd pressure guage (will probably order from Northern) on a potential log splitter. I picked up a an 8hp engine and pump set up free.. Belt drive to the pump.(I know that�s not ideal for a splitter but hey it was free..and I�ve got the time...) Pump, spool and resovoir are one unit much like the hyd pump on a snow plow set up and is double acting. (originally it powered a small 1 inch diameter rod cylinder). To test it I hooked it to a good 2.5 inch diameter cylinder I had laying around the shop and she works fine in and out. B4 I spend any money to build a splitter id like to check the pressure to see if the pump has the �flow� (if that is the correct verbage) to power the proper size cylinder (which I will have to purchase) for a splitter. Resovoir size issues will be taken care of so don�t dwell on that. One concern I do have are the inlet and outlet ports on the spool. I don�t recall the size JIC fitting I had to reduce to in order to get the 2.5 inch cyl hooked up but they are small. My assumption is that this restriction will cause slower cycle times. So for the real question, where to I put the guage and at what point do you take a reading to determine the pressure the pump can deliver??? Will the fact that Im testing with a 2.5 cyl with maybe an 1.5 inch rod skew the results or is the cyl size a moot point when testing?? Thank you in advance dave

The wood is going to have to be easy to split or that system runs at 4500psi. A 1000 or 2500 psi system on a 2-1/2" ram doesn't have enough force.

Tee'ing the gauge in the pressure line anywhere from the pump to the cylinder should give the same results. What you are lookin at is the pressure the relief valve is set to, when it's bypassing at the end of the cylinder's stroke.

As far as flow is concerned, note the cycle time of the cylinder. Then figure the area of the cylinder bore's diameter, multiply that by the stoke in inches, and you'll have the cubic inches of oil needed for a full stroke of the cylinder.

There's 231 cubic inches in a gallon, so once you know the volume displaced by the cylinder, and the cycle time, you can calculate the gallons per minute the system is producing.

Then you can calculate the area of another cylinder, and figure the cycle time for that alternate cylinder choice.

The cylinder rod diameter (if it is a conventional type cylinder) will not affect the extension of the cylinder, but will affect the retraction time. The bigger the rod is, the more oil it displaces, and the faster the return cycle will be.

As far as line size, unless the line size is so small in relation to the pump output that it can't take the full output of the pump without bypassing some oil through the pressure relief, the line size will have very little effect on cycle time.

If the line is so small as to be restrictive, there'll be more heating of the oil, and if it's REALLY small, you'll get some bypassing, but otherwise it should be OK.
