metal cutting band saw

Was looking to buy a metal cutting band saw for home use. Most I looked at are China or Taiwan made. Are they OK to buy. What should I look for or stay away from? Thank you.

Enco usually has the best price, $169.

Look at these saws as somewhat of a kit, you will end up adjusting or taking apart and putting together some things.

The gear box oil in mine was sick looking stuff, put 90 weight gear oil in it.

The legs need a 1" angle from front to back on each side. Have it extend out the back about 6" for wheels.

If you gave the blade bind up when cutting a wide piece of metal, use a blade with fewer teeth per inch.

You can buy them with a name on them, like Rockwell, but they are the same as the no-name cheapo ones. Just look, aside form the decal and color, the same.

For the money they are OK.

This is just another opinion but I think old and made in USA will serve you better than new and made in taiwan or China.Sears, some time ago, sold some pretty beefy band saws under the Craftsman name.A band saw to me is one of the most useful tools.I have an old Craftsman that takes a 10 foot 6 blade.I had to change pulleys to slow it down for metal as it seemed to be fast for wood work.[motor pulley not blade wheels]

25 plus years ago, we bought my Dad a cheap metal band saw, except for the legs on this thing being a little wobbly at times, it has cut a lot, I mean a lot of steel, and just keeps on going. No Problems.

Have you looked at Ebay ?? they have alot of Industrial quality band saw"s on there , trick is to find one close enough to pick up in person and get the size you want. I got one about a year ago Great old saw, all cast iron cost me about 400 and had to go 200 miles to get it but well worth it .it might take awhile to find on on there though took me about 5 months to find the right one close to me .

Robert1: I've got a "Clarke" brand 4x6 horizontal/vertical saw, which is what TSC sells as their house brand. You can ignore the brand name on most of these--they're identical or nearly so, and made in the same factory. Mine has been a great addition to the shop. As with most of the China stuff, don't expect it to work perfectly out of the box--they'll need a bit of tweaking, tightening of loose fasteners, etc. before they work properly. However, if you can live with that, you'll get a very usable saw for around $200.

I have one of those from Harbor Frieght we have had it a very long time and is has been good. Not real percision I just adjust the blade to run square with the slideing guide all the way open because if you move it up and down it changes angles. Once set and left alone it is fine.
