When I hit the button for the opener, the motor buzzes, but the chain doesn't go. Any ideas on what the problem is? It's a Craftsman 1/3 hp model. Many thanks.
James

If by buzzes you mean the motor runs, as stated below the gears are shot -- just did mine a couple of weeks ago.

If it buzz's, you either have a bad cap. or check the door free hand and see if it is binding. If the motor runs and dont do nothing, probably bad gears or sprocket. Those 1/3 HP jobs are pretty light duty so the door has to be real free. Older wood doors need to be kept adjusted so there is not much pull on the motor.

The plastic gears in mine (Chamberlain) are good for about 6-7 years; takes about 2 hours and 25 bucks to fix..... ...p.s. it's used a LOT..... .

You can replace them? Damn! I bought a whole new unit.

BTW: The buzzing motor up here means that the door is frozen down. This calls for a good, solid body check to the door to free it up.

I just poked around on the 'net and came up with a site where I could get a repair kit; had several items in the kit which I didn't need.....or use. Something more than 20 bucks as I recall. Had to pretty much disassemble the whole unit to get to the gears.....

sounds like the capacitor is shot. It's in there some where..gives the motor that extra shot to hoist the weight. Also....check the weight of the door. Disconnect the opener and open the door about waist high it should stay there. Also, check the internal gear...it's plastic and it has a habit of stripping from a misadjusted door.

The reversing mechanism could be jambed. Try disconnecting the chain from the door. Take it down and look inside.

Likely something stuck or binding, or a bad capacitor.
