Ya need to check your voltage at the head light it should read battery voltage. I have rewired a many a headlight by addn a relay to supply battery voltage 14 plus volts with the engine a runn and use the headlight switch wire to turn on the relays very simple set up.

My daughter was complaining of the same thing on her '96 Intrepid. Turned out the yellow film ont he plastic headlight lens was the problem. That new-fangled de-icer they're using on the roads was the culprit even though this was last summer and she had washed the car 3 or 4 times since spring. I got out the Windex and a rag went at it...no dice! I ended up using rubbing alcohol and paper towels...the difference in the headlights' output was amazing!

LJL..... ...there is also a Dodge TSB (free) for headlight switch problems in the 2nd gen p/u's. Have the Dealer check, its by s/n's. Bulbs do wear out you know, Sylvania "BrightStar's" are the way to go. 10yo trucks start to gitt bad connections. "clean, bright, & tight" the way to go..... ....Dell

I had headlight problems on my 92 W250 Dodge, was burnen fuse links. Took the switch out, checked it with an ohm meter, found out the thing was grounden out when I pulled the switch. Thirty bucks later and I had the antenna laid back burnen fuel at midnite.

Known problem in the 1st Generation (may have been corrected in yours) models was failure of headlight switch if additional lights (as in trailer lights) were added to the circuit(s). Could be increased resistance (as suggested by T_Bone) in the connections at the switch. Replaced my second one (headlight switch pretty much melted down, although all lights would still work intermittently) before buying relay to correct problem..... .

My 96 1500's highbeams work just fine. Most of my driving has been at night and early morning so they have been used alot. Only one bulb had been replaced since new (right side, low beam part).

I didnt have a dodge, but had a relatively knew car, lights were just like that. So I checked wireing and found a bad ground. Also sylvania makes a starbright bulb that is real good, but a little costly. Check out their web site for applications. Seems a lot of so called OEM bulbs off the shelf are not worth spending bucks on.
I dont think they should have ever quit the sealed beam lites.

I've got a '95 3500 and the only problem (not that it's really a problem) I've had with the lights is that I've blown both of the bulbs (for the 1st time since I bought the truck in '98) in the last 6 months, or so. I picked up replacement bulbs at Wal-Mart (Tractor Supply had them, too, as did the auto parts houses, I just figured Wal-Mart and/or TSC to be cheaper... and they were). I noticed, while buying my bulbs, a variety of gases... Xenon, halogen, etc. that were supposed to make brighter, whiter, bluer (whatever) light. I stuck with the plain old incandescent, but... there're some options for you...

LJL, I have a 96 2500 and had the same problem. I went to Autozone and got what I think was called "Starbright" bulbs or something like that. It made a big difference. Then, they also have a polish to help remove some of the hazing and scratches. Those are plastic lenses and they get a dull look to them. The polish made a really big difference. Those lights were never great, but now they are better...hope this helps.

I have one of those and I don't think it is a Dodge thing at least not in that truck. My headlights are fine maybe yours has the wrong bulbs in it ? Now on my 1999 Voyager van I can't see nothing with it,I have even tried some of those new brighter bulbs with no help.

Hi LJL,

I would take a voltmeter reading at the battery, then at the bulb connection. Anything more than .25v voltage drop would indicate hi circuit resistance.

Now to find that hi resistance. I'd check the bulb conncectors, then relay connections, then switch connections, then the voltage supply wires.

To confirm the offending part defect, use jumpers to temperory replace the part.

T bone is right, it could be high resistance in the B+ supply side. If you do not have more than .2 of a volt drop on the supply side, check for high resistance on the ground side. Use y0ur volt meter, with the lights on, volt meter on 12 or 20 volts DC, touch the red probe to the ground side of the connector at the headlamp bulb and touch the black probe to the ground post of the battery. It should not read more than 0.2 tenths of a volt. If it reads more, the problem is on the gorund side of the circuit. ie; poor connection at the ground eyelet, broken wire, etc. If the electrical part is OK and oncoming traffic are not blinking their lights at you when you have them on high beams, they may be out of adjustment. They should be adjusted with the truck loaded in the manner that it operates 90% of the time.... Someone could have replaced the bulbs with incorrect ones, ie; less candel power.

Good luck,
dieseltruk
