Parts Washers - What solvent do you use?

I have an older 35 gallon can/parts washer that I recently bought used. The pump works fine. I was thinking about purchasing mineral spirits as a solvent or maybe Varsol. Thoughts and suggestions most appreciated.

I also have one of the older 35gal. drum parts washers from Safety Kleen. I purchase about 20 gals of the cleaner from the safety clean rep. some years ago and I'm still using the same stuff. The secret is dont let it get too dirty. I put a rubber gromet into the top of an automotive type oil filter then I put the hose from the washer into the filter and let it run for 8 hours. Also I never put anything really caked with crud into the washer without first scraping off as much as I can. About every 2 years I empty the drum into smaller cans while I clean any sediment from the bottom of the drum. The Safety Kleen stuff hasnt froze yet and it gets as low as -20 here.

I do not know if they will come to a home shop, but I use Safety Kleen. I own my machine, it costs me $78.00? dollars for them to come empty the old solvent, and replace with new, clean solvent. It may be a little high, but it takes me out of EPA rpoblems by letting them dispose of the old solvent with all the dirt, and junk in the bottom of the tank that might be classified as hazardous material.

here's a trick for your saftey kleen put a small bottle of hand lotion in it and it doesn't burn your hands if you work without gloves, we changed washer co. and that trick doesn't work with our new co. but we will find out what does work, there is nothing worse that working with rubber gloves

I go to menards or lowes and buy cheap brush cleaner or thinner works good and on sale 99 cents a gallon

We use Castrol Super Clean in ours mixed 50/50 with water. This is in the heated area of our shop where we keep it about 50 degrees F in the winter to keep from freezing. It works great and it's biodegradeable. Be sure to wear rubber gloves though because it will dry your hands out something terrible, but this stuff is awesome! It runs about $5.00 a gallon, I've also used it 1:4 with water and it works good too, just didn't think it lasted as long that way.

My local bulk plant has a pump just labeled SOLVENT. About 2 dollars a gallon. I just fill a jeep can occasionally and add to the washer when it needs it. Cuts grease like mad.

I also use agitene.I keep putting five gallons back in the can and letting the crud settle down and reusing it.I have a secret five gallons that freinds cant contaminate for a clean rinse it is still new and green colored.I first was going to use kerosene but the agitene should have a safer flashpoint for all the fire hazard concerns.

I use Kerosene, works great, does'nt stink like diesel...around here they sell it at the pumps at the local gas station

Have you tried "Simple Green" ? It's water base . I get it at the Meijures store....by the gallon..

It is kinda high, but I use Graymills Agitene 141 in mine. It works well, & is not so harsh to skin. If yours is the heated type that sits on a drum, it is meant for water-based solvents only.... I have one of them also, but the drum rusted out & I have not replaced it yet.

I tried mineral spirits. Wouldn't even budge the grease on my tractor parts.

Bought some of the $35/5-gal washer solvent at Advance Auto. It does seem to work better.

How does that work in comparison to those expensive solvents? I bought a cheap solvent that's water based and it's worthless. I have thought of using diesel.

Graymills also makes a concentrate to mix with water called Aquatene, works good but the alkali in it makes prunes out of you hands, you must wear rubber gloves.

i think youll find the best all around parts fluid is mineral spirits.its cheep,works good.i mix it with used oil when disposing of it. lucasss
