Well, Got no clutch control. Slave cylinder, or master cylinder is letting air into the system. Called NAPA for parts, their book does not list the slave cylinder, only the master. Are the two parts sold together?

Truck is a 6 speed.

Thank you for any help you can offer--

Our 2001 F350 had the same problem at about 60K miles. Bought the complete assembly from Ford for about $150?? A bunch of plastic--lines, reservoir and cylinders. I changed it in a parking lot away from home in the rain--not fun. Biggest problem was figuring out how to release it from the firewall. I believe there was a snap ring of sorts and you also had to push in, turn 90 degrees and then it would come out. Took me several hours for this one but now that I know the "tricks", the next time I could do it in an hour or less. There's also some linkage parts to remove around the clutch pedal and be careful not to damage the safety switch for starting--it's mounted on the clutch pedal linkage.

Have you touched a nerve in me!
99PSD purchased sept 98. 350 4x4 duals 6 sp. Same trouble bout a yr ago. looked for slave cylinder ford pule tells me I cannot get-$169 for whole shebang. sure!
Nother ford puke tells me they upgraded can't get old even whole shebang.

Finally get slave cylinder. Not the problem. The ring around the original clutch failed, sending spring into pressure plate.ford puke says Sorry, 3 yr 100K on motor done 62K on truck. $1200 to fix. Purchased luk clutch, $524. 6 smaller springs instead of 3 big ones on fomoco original. $378 labor + new pilot bearing.

Original clutch still has 90% of disc.

Show original to fomoco ask WTF, over. Says call customer service. Good I cannot reach thru phone to rip throat out of "customer service rep".

How we know it is clutch? I say have pics want em? NO!
I could go on, about ready to shoot computer but is just the messenger.
Sorry this is hard to read. Hard to see typing thru red eyes.

3 years OR 100K miles. What don't you understand about the warranty? The truck is a 98 model and in 2004/5 you want Ford to honor a warranty that expired over 3 years ago. Besides the fact that you sound extremely unreasonable, your postings are next to impossible to understand. Ford Motor Company should be so lucky for you to never purchase another one of their trucks.

Wow, you really can form complete sentences without the use of slang. I knew that you could do it. Now work on that reading comprehension issue and you will go far.

You also had the option not to read my comments, or at least to not respond to them. Funny how everybody else is a puke. Don"t rant about something that you are absolutely wrong about. A clutch is next to impossible to have replaced under warranty. Even if the truck was only 2 months old, the clutch is a wear part and is almost never covered. Read the fine print, vehicle warranties generally do not cover wear parts such as clutch or brakes.

Once again I will state the facts for you. September 1998 to even January 2004 (you said about a year ago) would be over 5 years. You stated yourself that the warranty was 3 years OR 100k miles. You then proceeded to act indignant about the fact that the truck only had 62k miles and was out of warranty after 5 years. You don"t get both. It"s one or the other.

As far as you Jim D in Ohio, SIUYAAGFY!

Mud, the bleed screw takes an allen wrench, 1/8th if I remember right. look around where the line plugs in for the allen screw. if you change the slave cyl, there is a pin you have to remove that holds the line in. and there is an easy way, and a hard way to bleed the cyl.

I had the same problem on my F250 with PSD and 6 speed, bought the complete assembly from the Ford dealer and replaced it. The assembly includes the slave cylinder, master cylinder, reservoir, and all connecting lines. It is sold ready to install. This seems to be a common problem as it has happened to several owners of PSD Fords that I know.

Hi Mud,

I never changed one so only passing info that I've read. From what I here you don't wanna buy the seperate master and slave as there a real PITA to bleed. You have to bleed from the slave with the master higher than the slave but the slave is extremely tuff to push in.

The Ford CD manual says they have to be bench bleed as described above. Don't make awhole lot of sence to push in the slave ram to bleed air into the master.

Now if they have a bleeder valve on the slave then I can't see why you can't bleed from the master as normal... maybe cause the slave is PLASTIC!!!

From Ford, the complete units, pre-bleed is about $125??? Gees I just can't remember but that sounds right.

Shoot, I crawled under the truck for a look. That slave is nothing like what I have worked on in the past. No bleed nipple anywhere. Looks cheap too, but has worked for 114K so I cant say too cheap.

So how does a pre-bled deal work? Is it sealed and full of DOT3 when you buy it? If so, then the tube between the slave and the master must be plastic too?

Yep,yep. Sons 2000 F-250 took a crap over the weekend. No pedal pressure all of a sudden. 100000 miles so I called dealers asking questions.
Ended up buying the master/slave assy. and installing it. Not hard to do at all. But did not fix the problem....
Took it to a shop and they pulled the tranny. Spring had come off disc and lodged in pressure plate at throw out bearing.
Now we got a new Luk clutch assy ordered for it. Should be done this week. Kit is $622.00 for new flywheel, plate, disc, pilot and throwout bearings.

Hi mud,

You might give Bob Riley a chance at the LUK price. I've only made one order with him (another part) but have talked with Bob on the net for the past 5yrs or so and with nary a ill word towards his business from other posters.

Thanks T-Bone, Sure hadn't planned on this expense, in Feb. Found the best price on the LUC kit at Carolina Clutch. Going to tear it down on Sat. Need the truck on the job on Monday. Had to jump on it.

Say? Would you drain the transmission and tranfer case and refill with synthetic atf while doing the clutch job? I hear good things about the stuff.

Thanks again for your help with this. Nice to be able to ask guys here.

If the book calls for ATF fluid, draining and refilling with Synthetic is a good thing. I have a Ranger with a Mazda 5 speed that uses ATF. At 27K I drained the original fluid (30K recommended change) and got black gunk out of it for fluid. Refilled with AMSOIL ATF fluid and ran about 5K drained and refilled for another 7K or so and then changed at 10K, finally going to 15K and now up to 20K mi and it still comes out clean as new. Tranny is smooth winter or summer and I've felt of it after a long drive on the road and its not very hot either.
