What's everybody's favorite gunk for loosening frozen bolts? I've got a doozy on my sickle bar mower, a half inch eye bolt that's killing me.

Bill,
heat it with even a small torch and then quench it with a little water. it'll usually turn right off then.

Hi Bill;
I haven't tried this, just read it in a trade mag recently: Iodine. A few drops and let it penetrate. I'm looking forward (so to speak!) for an occcasion to give this a try.

No two ways about it. JB-80

Had an old VW motor to take out once. Could only get JB-80 to half of the studs holding the exhaust on....guess which ones broke?

Hi Scott;
Just curious, if you had enough clearance to break the bolt, why not enough to spray the JB?
Not trying to stir, just to get a mental image.
Thanks,
RogeR

Some of the best stuff I've found over the years is GM's exhaust heat riser lube.

Comes in a spray bomb, will stand up to the temps of putting a torch to it while spraying it down. I believe it leaves a graphite film behind and the carrier does one heck of a number at eating rust.

Took about 10 minutes with a torch/lube to loosen up the balls on the mount of a JD #10 side mower that sat in the grove for 25 yrs.

Aerokroil! A little hard to find sometimes because it is an industrial product but the best I've ever used. I got mine off the web.

You can order it directly from Kano Labatories. You also should check with the owner of this web site, they are in business to provide tractor and equipment owners and restorers with products.

Aero Kroil is Excellent at disolving rust and corrosion. They have other good products too.

"Kroil" is an excellent pentrating oil in both aerosol or liquid form. Great for use in bores of firearms too ... will remove most lead fouling.
"Mouse Milk" (www.mousemilk.com) is another excellent pentrating fluid. Have used it on parts sitting outdoors for years. When nothing else works ... use an oxy/acetylene outfit! John

PB blaster does seem to work quite well. but if yoru impatient and good with a hammer get out the biggest cresent wrench you have and abotu a 3 lb sledge and tap it loose.

Been using PB Blaster for years and it works great. Until recently it was the best thing I had ever used. Now though I found some made by Lubrication Engineers that is better than the Blaster. The only thing is it's a litte more expensive than most people want to spend when they don't use it all the time like Dad and I do in our business. The main thing with whatever you decide to use is spray it today and let it set and work til tomorrow before even trying to take the bolt out. If you can warm the metal around it before you spray the penetrant on it will help it wick itself into the threads just like heating the fitting when you solder a pipe makes the solder flow between the two pieces.

Thanks for all the replies. NC Wayne, where do you get the LE? Their website doesn't have a dealer locator.
Many thanks to all.
Bill

I have luck heating bolts and fasteners up slightly and then apply a candle to the bolt and threaded area.don,t get it to hot or it will just burn the wax,just hot enough to melt and allow it to seep in.

if penetrating oil doesnt do it, heating it red may do the trick, if the area permits heating. lucas

PB Blaster has always worked for me. You should be able to find this stuff at Walmart or any auto parts store.

Hey, I want to thank all of you for helping me out over the last few days. I finally won the battle over a stubborn nut.

I swore Id do the right thing this time I wouldnt just go berserk. I bought the Blaster, tapped that bolt this way and that, waited, heated and cooled it, dripped candle wax, patiently waited, sent away for AeroKroil, even went into Tuscaloosa and looked at buying a torch I did all these things.

And then took a flashlight out there tonight, and a cold chisel, and beat the bejeesus out of it for about 15 minutes!! It finally gave up.

Onward,

Bill Findley
