FYI, stolen sometime this week from my property in Kansas City Kansas:

Miller Thunderbolt 225 AC welder and cables, on a homemade cart. This is the older model with the crank on top.

WERCO cutting torch, WERCO regulators & hoses.

Set of new "Cummins Tools" wood turning chisels, in the wood case, unused.

Craftsman 16" chain saw.

Also stolen was a Yaesu FT-100D amateur radio transceiver, nearly new.

I think they also poisoned my dog to keep him from barking. He was old, but dropped dead suddenly.

I'm heading off to check the flea markets/swap & shops, after I get off the phone with the police.

Had my roll-away cleaned out by my neighbor's dope head son. He got cuaght a few days later with the stero out of my car, but none of my tools. How ever I had the packing list from all my sets and went to sears and priced indivially. This drove the price of my set 4 fold, and it put him in jail for a little extra.

Think about who has visited your place over the past few days. I had something similar happen to me last year; it turned out to be two guys who came by the house looking for work. They came back later and helped themselves to about $1200 worth of my tools.

Bill, I too am sorry for your loss. Two years ago I had a similar experienc. I went to bought a survelance camera and mounted it in the shop. Yep, it is in living color, cost $80. All you need is a vcr, tape and camer. It is smaller than a golf ball, easy to hide. Then you have actual evidence. Go to x10.com They can provide you with what you need for future incidents. Good luck getting those low lifes.

Bill, I'm very sorry to hear about your loss, it is a very weird feeling you have after something like that happens -- like you have been violated. I had my barn broken into a few years back, they took tools, heater, portable generator. There were footprints in the snow where they walked out to the road. The police said they use a van and drop off a couple guys who go get the stuff and walk out to the road, where they pick them up. Of course, nobody was caught. The weird thing is that years later, every now and then, I look for something and can't find it. Police these days seem more interested in giving out DUI tickets, they are making $$$$ like crazy off them.

I know how you feel. It's been a couple of years, but the same thing happened with me. They broke the lock off a machine shed, and stole a new air compressor, solar fencer, battery charger, tool box / tools, etc. Called the Sheriff, and met with a Deputy that came out to "investigate". I decided the investigation wasn't going too far when the Deputy told me, "I could tell you where the stuff probably is...but, he's a pretty tough character...I know I wouldn't want to go over there."

Bill-KCK, Sorry to hear of that loss, for ya'll. It is a violation of your life. Like my Grandmother would say, just be thankful the $oBs didn't set fire to your whole place, And that you or any one else was ther when they showed up! If they would kill your dog, there is no-tellin what else they are capable of. Don't forget to check the local Pawn Shops too.
My Mom was robbed in Aug. 5 hand made rifles, that Dad made. Our County has a program where all Pawn shops inter the stuff pawned. Especially big ticket items, or valuable. It goes to the Sheriff Dept. If #s match to reports of thefts then whistles and bells go off. OBTW...Mom got back all the rifles.
If you County has something like that in place, that chainsaw might be the one thing they pawn .
Good Luck
Later,
John A.

Yeah, its real frustrating. I had some stuff taken around my place, once when I had my house resided, I didn't notice untill a couple of months later, can't say it was them, but it's likely. Another time I found a hunting blind built on my property, that pissed me off, but when I realized they had stolen wood from my unlocked barn and taken straw bales to sit on, I went ballistic. I lock everything up now. One other thing, I used to keep a pistol loaded and ready to go. But I started to think: what if some dumb kid broke in - he might do something truly stupid with it. Or if the criminal was in the house when we came home - would he have the gun? I lock all my guns up now. Most crimes are kids and opportunity, but your stuff seems to be somebody who knew what to take - and knew you had it. Irv

General concensus these days seems to be that it is tool-owner's fault for not securing things better..... It makes me so mad.. everytime a decent, hard-working, God-fearing person gets ripped off the liberals want to blame him for not having things secured better.....I guess the answer is for us to have nothing, that way we cannot lead thieving scum trash into a lfe of crime....

Happened to my cousin just a few weeks ago. Someone got into his shop while he was gone-got impact wrench, sockets, wrenches, lots of small, loose tools, and a can of gas. It's getting bad here in my neck of the woods, when I was a kid, we never even locked the door! I keep all my stuff (The end product of 25 years work), under lock and key. I've been lucky so far, hope it holds out. Hope you get your stuff back. Best Wishes

Probably should talk up the ham transciever on the local repeaters, ask the guys to keep eye open for it in the local flea markets, etc. These are items that can be fenced to a limited audience! Hopefully you have the serial number for it on file, on a receipt, or the box or manual, etc. May turn up at hamfest swaps, but not likely that theives would go to all that trouble to liquidate it. More likely it and other items would show up at a pawn shop. de WB8VWK

Bill, sorry to hear, the buiness end of S&W is best justice. When I had over $2000.00 hand tools stolen a few years back the Cop's complained about wasting their time writing the report, when I got a tip on said tools the Cop's,again said it was a waste of their time and refused to investigate.Good luck!

How about getting an autopsy done on the dog??? If he was poisoned, that is a real serous offense, if guy is ever caught... All it would take is to get the Humane Society or PETA involved. My bet is that is a local that did it, usually that is the ones that do it. A while back, a neighbor let his drug-addicted uncle stay with him. He was caught trying to break in the home of another neighbor, who is a deaf lady in her 80's. He got away before the police got there. But it turned out he was on the local Most-Wanted list for armed robbery !!! I have a feeling he had been in my house also, although I found no signs of forced entry, just a gut feeling... I am missing a pistol & some old coins... Still looking , I hope I just hid them from myself too well..

A shame about the loss. A guy works his A** off and takes months, maybe years to buy stuff and its gone in 5 minutes. Some Jerk steals it who is to lazy to work and needs "Habit money". Having an ID number will help if the jerk is caught. We live close to an elevator, anhydrous thieves hit it often and the neighbor is always losing his dogs. Fact is a couple weeks ago there were a rash of big breakins, thieves even took the company truck to haul it off with. one guy had a 100 Pound Rottweller chained inside for a guard dog. The SOB strangled the dog with an extension cord. But I say now, the mistake was having the dog chained and then not having 2 of them. But I guess if the dog had mauled him in the process, the proprieter would have gotten sued. Wonder if those low lifes dont need the business end of a S&W??? They wouldnt steal no more.

Bill,

I'm really sorry for your loss. I hope you can recover some of the stuff.

I had an ethics teacher in college a long time ago who said, "Money is life." His point was that we trade irretrievable portions of our lives to earn money. When someone then steals our money or possessions that we bought with that money, they have, in effect, stolen a portion of our lives. It's as though they have killed us before our time to die by the amount of our lives that we had traded for that money.

I've never had a problem with being tempted to steal, but that class really cemented in my mind how despicable theft really is.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

I am so sorry for your loss. I know the feeling.
Came home from a work trip and backed truck into
drive very close to house. Came in at 1:30 AM
and by 6:30 AM large tool box weighing more than 400 pounds gone. Box was locked but not mounted
to truck. Many years of tools gone. Some of the
tools were special tools handmade for specfic
purposes and others were tools handed down from
my Dad, that really made me mad. But what made me the maddest was the way the sorry piece of
#$%& police officer treated me. He told me I was wasting my time having him make out report
because I did'nt have every piece marked. He told
me to just not to bother looking for tools and just go buy some new ones. I have to say that
was several years ago and I have replaced most of
those tools but still realize when I work on something that I am still missing many tools I
did'nt realize I had. Feels good to get that
off my chest.

Russell, you are a perfect example of the "victim turned culprit" mentality..... Liberals blame us for working & having something..... .. Like my above post about the gun..... I am scared to report it stolen... if it is involved in a crime.. I am the bad guy, & crook is the victim...

I used to work with a guy who suffered repeated break ins. He had a terrific gun collection of 30 years stolen, along with numerous other stuff. It was the work of his own drugged out son. It caused terrible problems with his family, and ended in a divorce. The son was still doing bad last time I heard. I had a cousin die a number of years ago, his parents had a break in while they were at the funeral home. My uncle collected pistols, and had some old coins. It turned out that the other cousin, brother to the one who died, set his own family up, to pay off a drug debt. The guy missed his own brother's funeral because he was in jail. He has since spent most of his life in one prison or another. Too many times, the bad guy is somebody close to you. Irv

Hi Davis,

Your probably wise in not reporting it stolen. Over christmas my grandson stole one of my registered pistols and some cash.

My son just finshed a CCW refresher course and said they just changed the laws in AZ to where your required to keep firearms in a gun safe while in your home. So if I reported the pistol stolen then I was the one that was going to get into trouble.

With some bulling, I got my pistol back but no cash.

Well I didn't own a gun safe but I do now.

T_Bone, Your responses always make sense. I'd just like to say I sure wouldn't want to be a "real" man going to the funeral of a family member after they got ahold of a loaded Gun. One of the Packer coaches teenaged son had a funeral awhile back. How many victims have that loaded gun at hand when needed? It sounds good though. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against owning guns or hunting. I am for common sense.

Hi Bill,

I still keep loaded guns in the open while I'm here as our county Sheriff has about a 20min or longer response time.

It's when your gone, then it needs to be in a gun safe or you can be held responsible. We just happen to be gone when ours was taken and without a gun safe on sight then I would have been in trouble.

It's a crying shame tho that locks on a mans home is not sufficient any longer to protect his assets.

Something that hasn't sunk into the Grandson yet, is he now can no longer go hunting or target shooting with me ever again.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. So the next time some thug breaks into your house and sticks a gun in your face you are going to say "excuse me Mr. Thug, but could you give me a minute to open my gun safe that the state of AZ requires me to keep my gun in?"

If you are that big of a coward you are better off not having guns. Real men keep them loaded and readily accessible.

Coward? Real Men? in reply to Bubba, 02-06-2005 05:34:47
Mr. Bubba,

Your reasoned, thoughtful and considerate response is greatly appreciated. However, I might point out that a coward might well have a loaded gun available and a "real man" (a true real man) might not.

Gun availability probably does not decide manhood, except possibly to some very, very manly, manly people who are also very, very insecure and childish.

My guns are loaded and near at hand -- does that make me a "real man" and if I were to unload them or put them away would I become a coward? And, since my wife has her gun loaded is she also a "real man"?

By the way, did you notice that T-Bone said that his guns were available when he was home? Minor point, huh? Easy to miss unless one reads.
